Here's how you can craft a personalized learning plan for your continuing education as a software developer.

It was 1998 and I was in college (IIT Roorkee). It was the start of placement season and many were geared up for the big-buck software jobs. I wasn't so interested but one of my friends influenced me and I jumped into the race. So, how to prep? All I did was write a program on arranging numbers in ascending order - but I did it using 7 constructs - incl Arrays and linked lists. I analyzed each method to note the time to write code, performance of each program, resource consumption and ease of change. It helped me grasp the concepts. Next day I was hired. Point is, whatever learning plan you make - draw comparisons- could be across programming languages, across design patterns, across constructs within the programming language or more.

It's been more than a decade in this industry, it feels like every day I need to challenge myself to learn something new. Over the period, I figured out one formula for myself Getting clarity by asking the below questions - Why do I need it? - When will I complete this? - How much is it burning for me? - What is the trade-off?

I personally believe self assessment plays an important role in whatever you are trying to do in your life, it's not only about learning new programming language or framework. It gives you a comprehensive overview of your own knowledge, strengths and weaknesses on that specific domain in which you are going to start your journey. If you know better about yourself then it would be easier for you to draw a roadmap for achieving your goal. Once you are aware of your strengths and weaknesses you can easily calculate where you have to put how much effort. So same things happen while learning programming languages, it helps you to invest your time and to choose your resources wisely.

Working on this industry you soon will realize that there are more things to learn than what you can keep up with. If we are not learning something new everyday we are falling behind. Make sure to learn new meaningful, even when small, things every day, make sure you apply your new knowledge on your day to day activities. Next day, repeat. Never be afraid of something you don't know, only be afraid of not wanting to learn new things.

SWOT analysis is very important. Don’t just be part of the flow. Do you really have a passion of that language or skill? Once you decide, carve out the plan. Set clear and achievable goals of short term and long term. Keep evaluating on a quarterly basis if you are in right track. Talk to experts in that field and get guidance and stay relevant.

Make sure you go for a marathon instead of sprint in learning. This will be a habit and a long-term continuous process. Learning will be a parallel and important activity that should not impact your current deliverables and sprint cycle in software development. So I'm quite optimistic about my schedule. I've made a "3-2-1" combination to set the goals on top of SMART. * Three months of continuous learning where I'll have a small set of goals which will give me a sense of learning. * Two months of implementations and dedicated work on what I've learned. * One month of something fruitfully delivered what I've given to my last 5 months.

So what has worked for me is to write it down in the notebook/journal. Take a picture of it and put it at least at 2-3 places, where you can see that every now and then. In cricket, it is like batting in 2nd innings with target showing up on scoreboard all the time.

Choosing the right resources tailored to your needs and lifestyle will ensure that your learning journey is effective, enjoyable, and sustainable.

And not forget, the last step to gain a skill is to do it yourself. It would be great to use recourses with practical examples, allowing you to put what you’ve learned in practice and then provide the solutions or best practices.

This method allows me to understand their decisions and follow their thought process. While I've read books on various software development concepts like microservice architecture, I prefer a hands-on approach when learning a new software concept, programming language or framework. Additionally, numerous apps are available to quiz and challenge yourself on the go, making continuous learning more accessible than ever!

Choose online learning tutorials or courses like Microsoft Learn, LinkedIn learning. Also, find books on the subject in Books-a-million or SAP Press. O’Reilly’s is another good resource.

OKRs for Personal goals Create personalised OKRs for a year, set deadlines for yearly goals in each quarter. Breakdown the yearly task into small weekly activities. Spend few hours on that activities weekly, end of the week assess and plan for next week. Make sure you are on track for quarterly deadlines. Key is spending few minutes daily not reading everything in one go.
