Here's how you can connect with individuals experiencing homelessness as a social worker.

Build trust, be person centered, and meet them in their environment (safely). Working with the house less community is a very vulnerable population and they have readapted themselves to a different way of life. Use active listening, don’t assume you know their situation and ask open-ended questions. Be patient remember this is a community who often isolates from society, they don’t really have concept of time (other than sunrise or sundown), limited resources-don’t always have access to phones or connections and are always on survival mode. Stay consistent, validate and listen. As long as we keep to our word then you’ll be able to make a significant impact!

I have had an opportunity to shadow homeless health workers locally and I can vouch for their commitment to helping transient/homeless people. They always stressed the importance of building relationships with their clients as those who are homeless would have struggle to trust others due to being let down by many in their lives. When a professional manages to build a strong relationship, working with the client becomes easier. Trust based relationships help others including clients to open up about their struggles and seek/accept support. Statistically, Homeless folks are more likely to be vulnerable to abuse and violence. They are also less likely to attend to their physical health needs. Having a good partnership working can help.

We can build trust by listening their problem carefully. The effective way to connect with some other is to listen them and let them feel important to us.

Homelessness is not just a place of being but an integral product of our failing systems. Be genuine, empathetic, and seek to gain understanding in what their needs are and how they want to change. They own the meaning and we are just a small part of that.

Active listening is crucial in social work. It involves being fully present and attentive with your client; both listening to verbal content and being attuned to the clients nonverbal communication. It's also important that we clarify things that are not clear and seek to understand rather than respond. Active listening requires social workers to engage in self reflective practice to ensure that biases or opinions do not impact our work.

Listening to understand rather than respond is crucial. Homeless folks find it hard to connect with others as they are often marginalised. They value those who listen to them and their stories without judgment. I have been fortunate to meet some homeless people in the past but their stories are always compelling. They open up when you listen to them. It helps them trust the worker.

In my experience, there are always charities who provide practical support to homeless people. I tend to signpost them to these charities for laundry, food, clothes as well physical health support. In my town, we have a fantastic organisation that supports homeless people. They also provide dental care, benefits support and more. Often, homeless people don’t have the motivation to seek support. Signpost to necessary resources is vital to their wellbeing.

Respecting boundaries is essential when working with any vulnerable population, especially those facing mental health issues and addictions. Recognizing and respecting their autonomy is crucial. Allowing individuals to set their own pace for engagement acknowledges their unique experiences and reduces the risk of retraumatization. For those with mental health challenges, this approach can mitigate feelings of disempowerment and stigma. Allowing them to engage at their own pace helps build trust, which is essential for effective therapeutic relationships. Ultimately, respecting boundaries is about more than courtesy; it acknowledges their dignity, promotes autonomy, and supports their unique paths to recovery.

In my experience, the best way to build a genuine bond with a client is to: Is to be respectful, non-judgmental, curious, empathetic, and reopen and honest in your communications.

Empowering homeless folks is a way to help them help themselves. In my experience, by empowering them, we provide tools they can use for lifetime. Homelessness is all pervasive in England, more in big cities though. Sometimes it’s just signposting that can empower them as they would then get right support from relevant professionals.

This is where I face dilemma as a social worker. I agree to the idea that meaningful and trust-based connections can foster change but I'm also deeply aware of the systemic oppression that paves way to their homelessness. Actively listening to them to understand their unmet needs is one of the steps; followed by empowering them to explore support mechanisms (government schemes & programs besides other philanthropic endeavours) all the while ensuring that their most humane needs are being met till it becomes sustainable and individual-driven. It's a difficult process but one person at a time for now till it's remedied at a macro level too.

Build trust, listen actively, offer ressources, respect boundaries, encourage empowerment and maintain hope - all very good and none denialable. Though to actually get there - one has to start by being humle, being real and truthfull and keep reaching out and offer your "hand" especially when met with 1000 rejections. This trust has to be earned. And that takes time - and only by being there consistently, are you actually there with all you have to offer when the person is ready to give you that benefit of a doubt :) And in my experience that window of opportunity only opens ever so slighty and usually only once. But once your hand is taken - a fabulous journey can be achieved.
