For years I have worked on pitch decks and the primary goal is to present a turn-key solution to the challenges your client is facing. By knowing their market and the demographics you are best able to properly personalize innovation to the presentation. When considering the competitiveness of any given market, your best strategy is to bring forward solutions that no one has either thought of or properly implemented. My approach is always to be efficient with the client's time. I begin by addressing the challenge but use my limited time to provide a brief yet detailed path that includes all of the ways I plan to navigate the road blocks and achieve their goal.

This shows you’ve done your homework and are proposing something relevant. Identify Market Trends: Stay updated on current trends in the publishing industry. Knowing what’s popular and what’s missing can help you position your idea effectively and demonstrate its relevance. Understand Your Target Audience: Define who your book is for. Create a detailed profile of your target readers, including their demographics, interests, and reading habits. This will help you tailor your pitch to show how your idea meets their needs.

Identify Trends. Publishers are often looking for works that align with popular or emerging themes. Highlighting how your work fits into these trends can make your pitch more appealing.

Devote enough time to edit your work. Don’t compromise on this step, as it will significantly enhance the quality of your writing. Ensure that all major questions—Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How—are thoroughly answered. Reason through why you're keeping or eliminating certain pieces. Challenge yourself: How can you improve it further? Think about how else you can contribute to the work beyond writing and editing. Consider every perspective—critically, assertively, traditionally, and modernly. Reflect on their answers and work on them if they can improve your written piece.

I usually write in one day and edit the piece on the next day. This often helps me improve readability and clarity. Taking a break between writing and editing allows me to approach the work with fresh eyes, making it easier to spot errors and areas for improvement. Additionally, I find that reading the text out loud during the editing phase helps me catch awkward phrasing and enhance the overall flow of the piece. This two-step process not only polishes my work but also ensures that I present the best possible version of my writing to publishers.

Summing up your story to bring it to a beautiful, clear conclusion distinctly communicates your message to your listener with a call for action that can not be resisted.

One important thing you must have in mind while crafting your pitch is that, it isn’t as much about you as it is about the publisher. You idea might be great, but your target audience needs to be involved. I mean, they need to find interest in the pitch. It need to embrace their values. So, consider their editorial policy. Know the kind of stories they buy. This you can find out by reading and reviewing their own websites or whatever platform they’ve got. More so, never be afraid or ashamed of asking questions to those who’ve been there or pitched successful story ideas to them before you. Once your data is in place and you’re pretty sure of what they need, put in your own style (not too much, though) and write that pitch. Cheers!

I’d like to address the inexperienced writer, who’s got no awards, portfolio or past publications to glory on. If that’s you, fear not. Your bio is a great opportunity to get publishers interested in you. In my little lifetime, I’ve learned that people aren’t always carried away by those celebrating their accomplishments. In fact, this could produce the adverse effect, bringing competition and wariness. Whereas, when you have nothing to show but a bio, you present little or no fear. Therein, you will show those unique qualities of yours that are beyond déjà vu and will create in certain publishers the desire to work with, so as to earn credit for uncovering a hidden talent, hitherto unknown to many. Believe me, great employers love that.

Don't be afraid to ask for feedback. If your pitch is rejected, a polite request for constructive criticism can provide valuable insights into what didn't work and how you can improve. Publishers and agents often appreciate writers who are eager to learn and grow. Remember, every piece of feedback is an opportunity to refine your approach and increase your chances of success in future submissions.

Be ready to fall, but never quit! Be resilient; nothing good comes easy. Rejection is part of the process. You aren’t always rejected because you don’t meet the expectations. Sometimes, you’re just too way ahead of them and accepting would simply mean reducing your impact. I once attended a job interview, during which the employer told me I was already selected. But strange enough, many months after, I didn’t earn the contract. I painfully moved on, not understanding what had happened. Almost have a year after that, the employer gave me a call and told me: “I didn’t call you back, because you have too much to offer. That position would have limited your potential.” Guess what! She was calling me to also request a service. keep pitching.

One blunt but very useful advice I received was : writing is an art but publishing is a business. Like any good business a successful publication query has a revenue model. When a publisher signs a book they are essentially investing in it. Tell them why investing in your writing is beneficial and profitable for them.
