One thing i find useful is to join alummi gatherings or photography activities where the institute/university invited Alumni's to share their experience. Use these as a starting point to keep in touch with them and improve your skills.

I just registered to attend a photography program this Fall, within the past month. Unfortunately, I live in a beach town, and the closest place for an education in photography is a 45-minute drive away. Having an electric car, this is about as far as I can reasonably commute more than one time per week. That being said, I discovered my extreme passion for photography in the months after I stormed out of the dreaded post office... I no longer had a job, so I had plenty of time to experiment on my own. I am only 1.5 years in, and I already have an online art gallery of my works which are ready to be sold.... My style has evolved since I started, and it will continue to evolve. An education will not teach you your style.

Honestly, a formal structure for learning photography might not be for everyone. If you want to try an alternative route, I suggest getting a mentor who specializes in the subject you want and do everything you can to learn from them. Offer to be an assistant, carry bags, or anything to support their work. The best assistants are helpful in so many ways beyond just doing the actual shooting.

I think you also need to decide what kind of photography you want to do: fashion, product, cars, food, and ultimately fine art or commercial photography. This will narrow down schools that offer these practices.
