All advice here is good. I would like to add that you should also chose a company according to plan B: what happens if you are not offered a full-time position at the end of the internship? I advice you consider this too, unpleasant as it might be. So also look for 'outgoing' companies, ask if there are opportunities to network and socialize within and outside your extended team. In the same spirit, look for companies that have Data Science in their operational and/or product core: every person you will meet is a potential lead to your next data science position and could even become a long-term professional connection.

I suggest avoiding full remote work in an internship as much as possible: Data Science is a team effort, and teams are made up of people. Here is my two cents for the students starting their summer training: Almost everybody in school is urging you to let them learn you something that is good for you or you should know. On contrary, it is not like that out there in companies or workplaces, except to the kind and mentor-like personalities that you might happen to be lucky enough to meet or work with. Workplaces are competitive by nature, especially in terms of knowledgability and skillfulness. So it's easy to not learn anything useful and keep nagging about unfriendliness of the workplaces. Traniship is an experience to learn by yourselves, or make professional relationships that is bilaterally friutful in terms of helping and learning. That's how you'll enjoy it I believe.

Make sure to not lose out on opportunity to dig on the company's data which is real, dirty and unstructured.Often in internships what happens is candidates are given exercises to work on dummy data or data available in external websites as PoC.But what happens during your data science internship if you can learn your way to the actual data of the company and build algorithms around it , you will use the efforts and time judiciously and in a worthwhile manner and it would help in long run as well.

In addition to gaining hands on experience on technical skills, you should actively pick up soft skills that are typically not taught in schools. As you improve your programming, machine learning, data visualization skills, etc., you should improve your business communication, team work, problem-solving, and executive presence.

In an internship don’t go for comfort or convenience. Go for hard work and learning in companies with good reputation about how they treat their talent. You will be in the bottom of the hierarchy as an intern, but that doesn’t mean you are worthless; don’t let anyone convince you anything different is the norm. Go for the teams that have proven expertise and experience, with leaders that have an opinion about the direction they want to take their data science projects, and they communicate this vision openly and frequently. A good male-to-female ratio in technical roles is an excellent indicator too. As a data science intern candidate if you hear discussion on KPIs run away; a company should not rely on interns to fix their numbers.

Mine is a combination of the first four points. Data science is an umbrella term, including computing averages and using the most advanced predictive models. We can certainly rewrite the prior as something like "identifying the central tendency information by using enterprise-level statistical software." So, students must gauge the workflow and tools used by a company. They might want to scrutinize the job advertisement and ask for a description during an interview. Plus, to make a comparison, they should have some understanding of more complex statistical techniques and data pipelines beyond their curriculum. With that, they can ask whether the work to be done at that company is something: they can learn to do and they want to do.
