Here's how you can captivate and connect with students using storytelling.

My students are adults and real life stories help them engage. After 30 years of experience, I have loads of stories to tell them. It’s always a good strategy to connect with them. After listening to my stories, they feel much more comfortable to theirs, as well.

I work with adult students. My main focus is to get them to laugh, once you're laughing you're engaging. Humour works for almost everyone. I also learned something from the father of Andragogy, Malcolm Knowles....use the living lecture. If you have to give a lecture, then engage the audience by dividing them into 3 sections and saying, "The first group....you're going to find 3 things from this lecture that you think are the most important. The second group....you're going to find 3 things you question or disagree with. And the final group, you're going to find 3 things that need to be explored further or expanded upon." It immediately engages the audience and they start to make notes specific to their task.

I work with high school students. I relate thematic material to real life stories to help them make connections with the material and their teacher. This not only helps build human connections but also puts the material in a practical perspective increasing their understanding and giving them opportunity to apply the material to their own personal lives.

Happy to contribute in this forum on the importance of story telling as a powerful tool to help engage young children effectively. As an Early years professional, I would like to consider the enabling environment as one of the major contributions to story telling. Resources made available to support children age and stage appropriateness will help them in effective exploration. look to problem solve, give a new beginning and ending to a story and also relate the scenario with their immediate environment. Help them to manipulate resources with their previous knowledge and experience with the real environment with a fair support on scaffolding is the key.

Rapport building is always must, need to connect with them first engage, need to understand their emotions and accordingly I work. Appreciate the students on completion of small tasks. Make them realise as they are also important. By doing so we can create interest as well as manage their emotions too

Building a rapport with our learners is all about establishing trust and finding the barriers that need to be considered in order for communication to be effective. Understanding the emotional and physical challenges that each learner brings is crucial before any learning can take place…

We have to build rapports with students. The students should have faith in their teachers. We have to listen and solve their personal issues and has to build a strong bond.

I truly agree with this technique. Because it will be helpful to catch the attention of my student and I've been practicing it and too value adding.

De algum modo, pelo menos na realidade aqui vivida, existe na academia um descrédito, ao menos relativo, do uso de tais recursos. Um bom exemplo seriam os slides. Muitos alunos também n?o aprovam. No entanto, é mesmo difícil acreditar que teremos outro caminho que em alguma medida a realidade de sala de aula “tradicional” ser integrada substancialmente com uso tecnológico e de recursos como imagens, aplicativos e elementos visuais/auditivos etc. Possivelmente, ainda n?o exploramos o potencial verdadeiro de tais desdobramentos em sala (até mesmo os alunos, porque desconhecem ao n?o se verificar).

To use storytelling effectively, you need to use visual aids. This is so that they wouldn't feel bored just looking at words. You could use images, photos and animation to depict a certain thing. This is so that they wouldn't have problem visualizing that thing. You could also use graphs, bar charts, pies and tables when it comes to explaining about figures and numbers. This is to avoid them from being confused.

Visual aids are crucial to engage our students with what they are hearing and our objectives. While story elements are helpful, presenting them with a picture of the setting or our characters, especially for children, enhances their creativity and imagination significantly.

Yo utilizo preferentemente fotos y videos que que grabado de mis experiencias en terreno, ya que sin duda cuando los estudiantes ven al docente realizando acciones práctica y no sólo relatando la materia, validan más el relato y ponen mayor atención, por lo que sin duda el uso de elementos audiovisuales le da un valor agregado a las exposiciones.

In my experience, visual aids leads to increased engagement. Visual elements can capture attention and maintain interest, especially in subjects that might otherwise seem dry or complex. They can also stimulate curiosity and encourage exploration of the topic. At a recent online session I attended, a simple idea of using one skill repeated....involved using the camera app and having students annotate or mark up their image. This lead to a very engaging session in which a number of highly visually appealing projects were created and was suitable to implement across a variety of key learning areas.

Emotional connect builds bonds more and better than any other thing. The students connect with you at deeper level and in turn you get more power to positively affect their lives.

Emotional engagement is a key aspect of effective storytelling. A story that evokes emotions such as curiosity, empathy, or excitement can make the learning experience more impactful. When students are emotionally invested, they are more likely to remember the information.

Storytelling is one of the oldest forms of teaching. It has been a part of human life - for as long as anyone can remember. We tell stories because It’s a way to bond and connect with one another. Teachers are storytellers by default ( i mean this should be the case :). Think about all of the times you’ve had to tell a story to help relate a concept or help students better understand a topic. Storytelling is a teaching strategy that you already use, and you may not even realize it. And personal stories are even more powerful (be careful though :)

I am sharing my experience of teaching maths to a kid in which I tried to adopt the storey telling method and found the class to be more engaging and interesting for me as well as the kid !!

Lesson Integration: Incorporate moral lessons, themes, or academic concepts into the storytelling to reinforce learning objectives. Variety: Experiment with different storytelling formats, such as traditional oral storytelling, digital storytelling, or role-playing.

Connecting stories to current events can make the material more relevant and engaging for students. When students see the direct connection between what they are learning and what is happening in the world around them, they are more likely to be interested and engaged.

The more the better. Engage all learners types (visual, audible, kinesthetic) in one session. Straight lecture with a PPT never achieves the retention you hope for. Use opportunities to have the learner engage in critical thinking. Don’t focus on the person willing to answer all your questions correctly, they understand the objectives already. Look to those who try to remain invisible for new perspectives.

I work in the outdoor education field. Taking students outside and having them focus on using their five senses is so valuable. It helps students connect with the world around them and relax. It is often the more memorable part of my classes. I make time for students to sit and be quiet to see what they can hear, smell, or feel.

Reflection: Provide opportunities for students to reflect on the story's meaning, relevance to their lives, or connections to broader themes or issues.

A great way to track one's progress is to ask repeatedly questions that we don't know. So, if you're a teacher never stop asking questions and also never forget to develop a habit in your students to ask questions. We don't need good answers to progress, we need great questions to exceed our limits!

Reflection is the time to ponder on the feedback. Positive* action taken from the feedback is what allows for growth whether it’s for students, teachers, departments or schools. Lean into feedback, feedback is a gift.

En tiempos digitales sobre-comunicados y hasta de posible info-xicación y en una economía de la atención, todo el contenido está disponible online, aunque para el entendimiento y la reelaboración propia para generar nuevas soluciones resulta imprescindible la reflexión y la relación entre temas, opiniones y autores varios. Para quienes intentamos educar y formar criterios esa es la tarea principal.

I would like to add that students should be given insight into real -life futuristic aspects of the program they r undergoing. Each of them can relate and become interested in the teaching and teacher's lesson thereby.

Feeling comfortable in class is important for the learning environment. I make a point of conversing with every student one on one during the semester.

It’s important to establish the ‘why’ so the students are able to develop motivation which will make it easier for them to retain the content and want to revise. The ‘why’ can be articulated in various ways by establishing early on: How is the content relevant? Why do I need to know it? How does this fit in to the broader objective? How does know this topic/developing this skill impact or benefit me? What are the risks of not understanding this content? Looping the answers to these questions with story telling enables a smooth way to enable motivation development, drive a passion for learning and allow students to establish connections.

Finally, keep your stories simple and relevant to the topic at hand. Avoid unnecessary details that might distract from the main point. The goal is to make the lesson more engaging, not to confuse students with overly complex narratives. Make sure each story you tell has a clear connection to the learning objectives of your lesson.

Remember to be human, verbalize this and expect it from your students. Remember the goals of the course, complete the objectives and hold students accountable. Show the students we celebrate when they succeed, and that succeed is not always a passing grade, that success comes in many forms.
