To build trust with stakeholders, start by developing a deep understanding of emotional intelligence . EQ comprises self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills . By being aware of your emotions and how they influence your behavior, you can manage interactions with stakeholders more effectively. Self-regulation helps you stay in control during stressful situations, ensuring you maintain professionalism. Motivation drives you to pursue goals with energy and persistence, demonstrating commitment to stakeholders . Empathy enables you to understand others' emotional makeup, fostering better communication and connection. Lastly, honing your social skills allows you to build a network of supportive relationships essential for program success.

When a stakeholder recognizes that their needs and wants are being taken into consideration it strengthens the bonds of that relationship. A few good practices with active listening are maintaining eye contact, non verbal communication cues to the speaker that you're engaged in the conversation, and asking related questions. Remember that listening is not the same as hearing, and requires you to make a conscious effort in understanding what the speaker is saying.

Empathy, to put it plainly, is the ability to see from another individual's perspective and why they may feel this way. Be careful with confusing empathy with sympathy, and this is where your emotional intelligence will come into play to be able to discern the proper responses. It is easy to think you are being positive and showing the silver lining regarding a situation, but that is not an empathetic response. Dismissing, diminishing, or using humor to deflect someone's feelings causes a disconnect in the conversation and will cause them to withdraw. Instead, try being attentive and clarifying how they feel about the subject topic. Aim to show you care by reassurance and checking in

Firstly, understanding that conflict resolution is a skill where an agreement can be reached, that ends a disagreement where all parties are satisfied with the outcome. It is not to actually avoid conflict, but having the emotional intelligence to think from a broader perspective and see the bigger picture of what is trying to be resolved. One thing I've learned that has been a huge help is allowing everyone to speak fully, and keep the focus on the facts not opinions and spreading the problem with empathy.
