Here's how you can build a cohesive fundraising team.

Defining roles also rolls over into how you show up at the pitch. Ensuring you have your area of expertise covered and that there is well rehearsed and seamless flow between the areas of expertise when pitching and through any Q&A. This goes from showing he strength of the team, diversity, but also really showing that you are a team that can deliver. For many startups being able to express that you are a team that can work well together to meet goals is perhaps the best selling point to raising money from potential investors.

The fundraising sector can be cutthroat. Thus agility and speed is always critical. Every pitch process is never similar to the last one. A clear delineation of roles underpinned by a clear vision helps the team to flexibly navigate road bumps without falling apart, or losing its edge.

Be sure everyone knows their responsibilities and records their progress for the team can acknowledge its collective effort in motion. Constant brain storming and resource mining are essential.

One thing I found helpful is in creating a team is valuing everyone for their expertise. There should always be a Jack of all trades and a master of none. There should always be someone who can think outside of the box and someone who knows what the current Box looks like in the industry But for sure, explosive dynamic energy comes from People who have many different ways to get to the same destination. Fundraising can be one campaign or it can be a bunch of small campaigns that lead up to a big campaign or it can be consistent appeal approaches. valuing diversity and thought leadership is important.

In my experience, aligning the team to a vision is the most important first step in creating a sense of unity. A team that checks "self" at the door will not only be successful but enjoy themselves along the way. This is done through candor and clear expectations from the very beginning.

Based on my experience I believe that in order to build a cohesive fundraising team, start by: 1. Clearly defining roles and responsibilities to ensure everyone knows their part. 2. Encourage open communication and regular check-ins to foster collaboration and address any issues promptly. 3. Cultivate a positive team culture by celebrating successes and learning from setbacks together. Provide ongoing training and support to help team members develop their skills. 4. Lastly, align the team around shared goals and a compelling vision to keep everyone motivated and focused on the mission.

Similar to my last response, ensuring you have ample team meetings scheduled with agendas included well in advance. This allows team members to properly prepare, be aligned on expectations, and to have a smooth/productive meeting. ALWAYS have the goals reiterated in these meetings and determine if a goal needs to be adjusted.

I truly believe that putting people together who believe that your goal is possible and they are excited about it and they are knowledgeable about it and are willing to use their time and talent to make it happen is the Succes of fund raising before it starts. having people embedded and invested in the values of what you are trying to support create a synergy that keeps the door open for the teams creativity and greater opportunities for success. Teams want to know what the outcome will be they want to clear a concise target and they want something to shoot for when they score the final basket or the winning dollar, celebrating everyone is critically important for all members on the team

Make room in your budget for team members to join a related professional association. In addition to educational sessions which can provide valuable learning opportunities, your employees will connect with like-minded colleagues. This provides them an opportunity to learn from others in similar roles and bring ideas back to your organization. Associations can also offer opportunities for your team members to volunteer and gain additional skills and expertise which in turn benefit your team, and also give your organization visibility as a team player in the industry.

Cultivating skills and investing in the team works the same across any initiative. Helping the team grow both for the immediate needs, but also for the long term. This should also reflect the ever changing dynamic of the fundraising environment. Being in tune with the most relevant technology, channel, needs and ideas of investors and sources of funding means the team needs to be on top of the game. There is intrinsic and extrinsic value in keeping up with the professional development of a fundraising team, not only are they more motivated and feel more knowledgable about the task at hand, they are more likely to succeed as they are probably more in tune with the source of funding.

Automate the Process! Set automatic thank you postcards, event postings, personalized photos from past events that are sent to donors, sponsors, volunteers, etc. Set reminders on the calendar to alert specific personnel to upcoming events or meetings. Versify the types of digital and non digital communications sent out to ensure the intended recipients are receiving correspondence based on their preferences.

Alongside using tech to manage tasks efficiently as suggested, also consider how to utilise tech to support goals and celebrate success. Using a friendly UI driven by your CRM to track performance is a great way to keep focus and productivity on key goals, whilst also being a great way to highlight and celebrate success.

Clear goal communication, whether this be the corporate strategy and use of funds, or the actual process through which you are going about your fundraising is critical. The goals for fund raising must match the investor/funding type that you are targeting, the amounts must fit both your internal needs and the expectations of investors, the timelines are critical, both for your own runway/project expectations, but also for the funding source as many types of funding take longer to secure than one would initially expect. So communicating SMART goals, and having the North Star for the team can really help the team meet inflection points and actually achieve some of those goals, it will help keep the team all rowing in the same direction.

Celebrate a successful campaign, but make sure to assess and define what success looks like to your organization and who achieved the goal. Quantitative and qualitative success need to be separated and given different value. Ultimately, if your consistently successful, you need to push the bar for what can be considered a great feat in the next fiscal year to avoid complacency and push the boundaries to raise funds and accomplish your mission.

While it's important to celebrate success, it's equally important to celebrate failure. Fundraising done well (like sales) is riddled with no's. If you're not getting enough no's that you're not stretching yourself. And, while seasoned fundraisers are used to getting them (no's that is), it doesn't hurt for other members of the team to be supportive when they happen. Remember, there is always a gift or opportunity in every no. If nothing else, the gift of support from the team.

One of the most valuable lessons learned through many years of leading teams across multiple sectors, is that most will do more for appreciation than compensation. When we truly value our team - AND they know it, every member shows up with a higher standard of performance in their role. It makes perfect sense when we understand the hit of dopamine the whole team experiences as a result of celebrating the wins - even and especially the small ones. Stacking up small wins is how any team makes progress towards goals. Even the simplest acknowledgement of consistent efforts, such as making and nurturing new connections with others who see value in the cause can be the start of fruitful long-term relationships.

In fundraising it’s easy to diminish small wins! All dollars no matter how small are big wins. Remember it means that what you’re doing works and you need to continue on the momentum. Including all the topics listed above communicate with your team and make sure everyone has a defined role that way you operate at peak efficiency!

Commit to fundraising wholeheartedly. Fundraising, whether this be for grants, social Programmes, philanthropic sources or VCs is not to be undertaken lightly. In my experience each channel and source for funding can be very time consuming and can take a lot of effort and energy away from the core business. So make sure you and whatever team you assemble to go after the fundraising effort has the time and capacity to do so. Many organisations that provide funding will make you jump through a lot of hoops before the funding gates are opened (justifiably so) so be prepared for long complex questionnaires, in-depth due diligences, and more often than not harsh feedback from panels of experts that you might not agree with!
