Curiosity about new technologies, upcoming frameworks, internal company updates will make one a thought leader. Some of the best opportunity for different perspectives exist within your own team. To take advantage of those perspectives, it is important to know how to really listen and also to know how to make sure your team feels comfortable sharing diverse perspectives. I changed up my touch-base meetings with individual team members. Now I spend most of the meeting focusing on what my team wants to share. I start with the question "what's on your mind", and encourage them to keep sharing. It is amazing what you learn when you ask someone to share about what is important to them. Our team has found more effective solutions by considering each team member's perspective.

Bringing people in from all levels is important. c suite leaders are not always in day to day operations so hearing from frontline workers is essential for key decisions, they bring very insightful information.

Not everything can or should come from within, seek out new ways to engage and develop.

I’ve been very blessed to have a robust and diverse network, and have routinely reached out to a trusted mentor to “workshop” various scenarios. It’s been extremely helpful to hear the perspectives from someone who’s not in the weeds of my organization. They have offered wisdom and insight, and personal experience. If I would have been bouncing these ideas around in my head solo, I would invariably have missed some warning signs or something that would expedite success in one area or another. I’m a verbal processor, and I’ve found it extremely helpful to talk through different strategies and possibilities because it’s often led me to the solution. Don’t be afraid to tap into your network, but also be willing to return the favor!

Ask: What if? What if we do this? What if we don’t? What if there is another, better way? What if there are many? Explore but don’t get stuck. Paralysis by analysis is a thing. One the other hand, don’t rush it (something I do frequently). Wait until you have to decide.

While or after planning with others, plan with yourself! You have more of the answers than you think and running through different scenarios can strengthen your narrative. Record yourself as you answer questions or prep for a presentation. Watching yourself can be both humbling and encouraging. Are you saying what you actually mean? What do you need to keep or change? Where do you need help (and who can you ask for that help)? You have to get comfortable in your own voice and story before you can share it with others.

Often times when a decision requires specific strategy, I have a go to within my network who’s either encountered it or can shed light on the framework I’m using to decide. Keep connecting!

Executive leaders should listen to their staff and other key stakeholders. Strategic direction cannot be one person's idea although it is a good start. Leaders must engage staff, the board of directors, community partners, and consumers engaged in this discussion. Collaboration is the "hook" that creates excitement and support for new strategic directions. Otherwise, a leader could be fighting an uphill battle as there may be budgetary constraints, the need to hire staff with the expertise needed, and time demands that may not be realistic. This is particularly true for smaller nonprofit organizations.

I work with women leaders and, unfortunately, the most overlooked contributor to strategic decision-making is spending time alone. If you're a woman leader and you are married with kids, you are almost never alone; you are either surrounded by your team, or by your family members. Thus, making time to regroup, think, write down ideas, and simply breathe on your own is incredibly hard - it can feel like time stolen from others. However, alone time is priceless when it comes to reconnecting with one's self, with one's sense of inner guidance, and one's wisdom. Therefore I encourage all leaders - but women leaders in particular - to figure out was to gift themselves with alone time regularly - yearly, quarterly, monthly, weekly and daily.

By embracing discomfort, you prepare yourself to handle complex situations and make tough decisions with confidence. You can leverage your strengths to make informed decisions more confidently by recognizing them. This self-awareness enables you to approach problems with a clear understanding of what you can handle personally and where you might need to rely on others' expertise. But also, more importantly, identify areas where you lack information or skills and make a concerted effort to improve these areas through training, courses, or self-study. Understanding your blindspots helps prevent oversight in decision-making processes.

What makes your organization unique. Usually it’s your talent and keeping your team and talent engaged will keep them retained. Look at ways to continuously educate and encourage folks to seek out and share new ideas and ways of thinking. Bring likeminded businesses together to learn and collaborate.

Get creative! Have fun and pursue your passions. Look for inspiration everywhere, especially outside of work. The best ideas and education may come from somewhere unexpected.
