Here's how you can balance work and life during a layoff in your Product Design career.

There will be a time where you will feel exhausted and tired from the work you do, if that's the case, my friend leave that place as soon as possible. if something cost your peace, its better to leave and move to the place where you feel you can manage your work and life balance easily without the feeling of carrying yourself daily to the same place with no excitement.

Getting laid off is challenging on all levels, and my plan would be to focus on personal development, networking, and maintaining health. Reading more UX and human behavior books, catching up with AI tools, and experimenting with AR designs are also on my agenda.

The most important part in this case for me will be continuous evaluation and improvement, there are a lot of talented people who are my direct competition so I'll have to upskill to a point where I am the best fit for a company. Reviewing old designs can help us identify what improvements we can make. Doing design challenges, reading or writing articles and contributing to the UX community can help. Social media nowadays is a good platfrom to gather feedback.

Use the time to learn new tools or improve your design skills through online courses or personal projects. Also, connect with industry peers through social media, attend virtual design meetups, and join professional groups. Look for freelance gigs to keep your portfolio active and maintain a steady income. The same time it is very importatnt to talk to friends, family, or career counselors for emotional support and guidance. Prioritize physical and mental health by exercising, meditating, and ensuring adequate rest. Keep a daily schedule to stay productive and reduce stress.

It can be a challenging time, but one must remember that they are not alone. Layoffs can be stressful, but they are not the end of the world. It's important to stay positive and take it as a time to enhance your skill set. A few ways to start can be: 1. Network with people in your field, update your portfolio and apply for positions that align with your skills and interests. 2. Don't neglect your well-being. Make time for activities that keep you intact. 3. Set boundaries. It's easy to get caught up in the job search, but it's important to have a healthy work-life balance. Set aside time for yourself and stick to a schedule. 4. Remember, this is a temporary situation. You'll find a new opportunity that's a great fit for you.

It's easy to get into a rut and let your skills stagnate—this is true whether employed or not. It's important to keep those skills active and growing, even if it's not directly tied to your income. One of the most obvious places your skills should be focused during the job hunt is on your portfolio / site. We all hate updating our portfolio while employed, and part of that is because it's more work. However, this something you are extremely good at, working for a client you are the expert on: you. If you've done all that, then consider some online courses in a new topic, or a hobby you might be able to glean design insight from, and blog about *why*.

It’s imperative to network and engage with future or former colleagues at all times in the design career field especially. The days of true job security are over, it seems that you are only as good as your network. That’s why it’s important to always keep the resume up to date and have interview answers always ready so you won’t have to get ready. Networking doesn’t just mean clicking connect on LinkedIn, it means building rapport with people and establishing trust. That could be reposting a post of someone looking for work, or sending a reference letter for someone. These things pay off in the long run.

The majority of roles and opportunities I've had came from either knowing someone at the company, or meeting someone connected at an industry event. Referrals have the magic sauce of opening a door, and getting you past the filtering process. Just remember that you should be doing this for other people exponentially more often than they do it for you!

Let's be honest: in this labor market, you're very unlikely to get a new role in a matter of weeks. That's okay! It's normal, and you should prepare to treat this period like just a different job. This means keeping the job hunt constrained to M-F, 9-5 (where possible… networking often happens after hours), and just like any job, try to leave the work stress "at the office". Do not worry about applying grind culture to this job; it won't help, and you'll end up feeling burnt out quickly. Time-box your time *looking* for jobs (ie, get off this site), set time limits in applying, and spend the rest of your time growing yourself and, if possible, your network of real connections with people you like.

Your paycheck arrives minus taxes. These taxes help pay for social programs built to help you during this period of time. There is zero shame in applying for unemployment benefits—you funded them, so you deserve the help right now—and you should take advantage of any and all programs established to help folks when their income has vanished. You will be amazed at the services that exist to help out. Just know that you'll need to minimize your expenses; cancel your netflix, and borrow media from the library, etc. Once employed again you may realize how much money you burned before… start saving for the next time capitalism bites you!
