To listen you need to - not speak. - make your research and know everything there is to know before you meet - ask the right questions so there is something to listen to - practice with your friends - accept that pauses are your friends (give the time to your interlocutor to find their words and develop their POV)

I think the majority of us know and recognise to actively listen; be in the moment, present. Unfortunately we often think we are listening actively and I know we all have the best of intentions. Practice checking in to see if you are listening actively, in the moment listening. Or listening to reply, you're not actually in the moment you're waiting for a break for you to reply. Take the time to identify this next time you're in a conversation. If you would like to make notes, ask permission while you're listening.

Life is busy and even the most engaged potential donors and partners that very much intend to donate, simply get swept up in the busyness of life and/or business. However, make your message relevant and personlised. Also match your audience's preferred mode of communication. Such as if they rang you, follow up with a phone call back unless they share they'd prefer otherwise.
