Video is no different. 1st - write the copy 2nd - plan the visuals that complement the copy 3rd- rehearse so it sounds natural and not written 4th - record 5th - Post production editing No social video is complete without captions!

Plan. Plan everything. When you think you've planned enough, plan more. Make up contingencies, plan for those. Never stop planning even after production starts. You won't be able to plan for everything but the more you do plan the more you will be equipped to handle the snafus that come at your during production. And they will come at you. It's as inevitable as death and taxes. Be prepared.

If its a low budget show and you dont have professional good actors on board make sure you arrange mock rehearsal for the ameture actors. Include this point in your pre production.

Redundancy is the name of the game. When preparing to pack for a shoot date always keep in mind that something is going to go down ot you will leave something back at home. Pack multiple of everything; lenses, cameras, accessories, etc. Three is two, two is one, one is none. That has saved me multiple times.

As a trailer and promo editor that’s now out shooting content, audio is just as important as visuals. When watching movie and episode rough cuts with dialogue only and then watching later cuts with sfx and music the picture comes to life. Audio creates energy, pacing and tone. If dialogue isn’t recorded properly it instantly pulls attention to the viewer in a bad annoying way. If music is wrong, impact and tone are lost. Sound effects are my secret sauce!

If content is king, audio is queen! Make sure you create a checklist to help you quality check before you finish recording. Learn the proper mic technique and experiment with distance and pop filters to help you cut out those plosive sounds. Also, get to know EQ. Shaky shots is an enemy to storytelling in my opinion, unless the story requires it. Visual Storytelling is carried by emotion and composition of shot and stability is important to convey emotion in the story. Steady shot can be a very powerful tool to drive a story and the audience will appreciate it.

Know your gear;how to balance your camera on the tripod, how to be smooth with handheld, this comes with experience, and understanding how the gear works. Don’t try to be too fancy, be simple and confident. Avoid zooming too much, well composed static shots can be highly effective.

Something I've learned is how interconnected the different elements really are. The more you plan your shoot, storyboard your vision, and troubleshoot potential issues, the easier each consecutive step becomes. When shooting, take an extra few seconds to pad the footage to avoid camera shake. That extra padding gives you breathing room to edit in a way you want, rather than reactively. This might seem simplistic, but: never forget the basics, and even when you’ve mastered the craft, you need to stay focused on the scene you’re crafting right now. Comfort creep is a strong factor, as you progress on the technical side it’s easy to forget that great camera work comes from telling the story happening right now. “Treat every shot special, no matter how big or small” is one of my favorite pieces of advice I’ve heard. Cinematography has clear cut terms for camera movements, they may seem underwhelming but it’s a toolkit that works. Doing an intro shot? Push in, literally get closer to the topic. Merely filming what’s in front of you is a documentary approach, deciding on what the movement is going to be and why is cinematic.

The thing that made me a better shooter was having to edit the video I brought back. Early on, I learned to shoot more shots than I thought I needed. Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. For a commercial shoot with a voiceover, I try to shoot with a script in my pocket. I review the script throughout the shoot and make sure I have video to cover each line of the script. There's nothing worse than not having a shot you need once you start editing.
