Based on my experience of managing talented designers, one of the most common mistakes I have witnessed designers making is - Putting personal taste / biases / aesthetic sensibilities when designing for an established or a budding brand. I believe, it’s critical that young or experienced designers should put the brand aesthetics and the target customers of the brand as the face before creating or developing any product for the brand! This will make products more brand relevant. However this is not applicable, when the brand is eponymous, where the brand identity is built on Designer’s persona.

According to me , When mistakes happen, analyse them to understand the root cause and learn from them to avoid repeating them in the future. After receiving feedback that a mobile app's navigation was confusing for users, analyse the user flow to identify where users got stuck. Learn from this experience by simplifying the navigation in future app designs.

As managing team of diversified designers the most common mistake which I observed is Overcomplicating designs. Not focus on understanding the target audience needs and preferences and design for personal taste rather design with user centric approach. To avoid such mistakes designer must focus on simplicity and clarity. Use clear typography and intuitive interfaces. Avoid unnecessary elements and features and deliver successful, effective, and user-centered designs.

First, always prioritize clear communication with your clients. Make sure you understand their goals and expectations inside and out. Next, do your research! Stay up-to-date on industry trends and best practices. Don't be afraid to ask questions or seek feedback from your peers and mentors. And please, create a solid project plan and timeline. Trust me, it'll save you from last-minute stress and mistakes. Stay organized, use the right tools, and keep learning.

Need a better understanding of the brand identity? Ask your seniors or work-mates. Need better usability? Show it to a prospective user. In all, anyone and everyone can give you something new, and refine your work. Just be shameless enough to be seeking feedback, especially when you starting off. Works wonders!

In my experience as an architect, I’ve come across a lot of designers who prioritize aesthetics over functionality. While visual appeal is important, it should not come at the expense of usability and user experience. We must first focus on ensuring the functionality of our design, and then conceptualize it’s form in a way that complements the functionality.

Never underestimate or be scared of the power of white space. I have seen many designers trying to fill that space just to fill it. This will look forced and distract from the main message. Often the best designs look the easiest to achieve but lots of thinking usually goes in hand with a great design. Always consider what you want the user to see first and then work around that. Consider the amount of copy, font choice, font size and don’t forget to make sure the leading and kerning reads well too!

Think of a really cool map in a game (or in life in general). The longitude and latitude lines give Consistency in the the user's ability to measure and make sense of what they are seeing. The Asymmetry of mountains, rivers, and other features are what creates interest.

The famous brands that we know have managed to transcend thanks to the vision of their Creative Directors who have managed to be consistent by sticking to the DNA of the brands. Not having pillars that are the basis of your projects is a mistake that we sadly observe in this new generation of designers.

In my experience sometimes you need to take a more practical approach. Whilst the client can get carried away with design, colours, practicality can get over looked. If this gets missed it often gets found out once products are in place at which point it’s too late. There is no avoiding mistakes in graphic design. Nothing is perfect and it's a fact. Don't take designing hard. Just do what you can and listen to feedbacks. Adjust and adapt to it and make your work better by time. Having a clear way for design process and problem solving is essential.

DON'T ASSUME YOU UNDERSTAND THE CLIENT'S BRIEF. In my experience, I've learned that assuming I understand the client's brief can lead to costly mistakes. For example, in a recent project, I initially assumed the client wanted a modern aesthetic. However, through open dialogue and asking probing questions, I discovered their preference for a traditional style with rustic elements. This exchange allowed me to adjust the design accordingly, ensuring alignment with their vision and avoiding potential errors.

My motto: Be yourself, develop and pursue your own design language and thus become unique, instead of seeking quick success by adopting trends and ideas from other designers in the mainstream and thus encouraging increasing arbitrariness. There are no mistakes in design. Design should cater to different audiences accordingly. So my advice is to always test whatever you're designing with the audience it is created for. Sometimes the results are surprising.
