Start on the shop floor when you graduate. Ask your mentor to put you on a on- the- job training program that covers workshops, assembly, machine shop, fabrication, foundry, stores and admin/cost reporting & controls. After that, whether you go into design & development or plant engineering, you will have a good understanding of people factors and machines as well as finance basics/ project Management. Train the basics early, so you can become confident in the rest of your career. If possible, get a management certification / MBA / Technology/ PMO/ etc. Like a dr, a good Engineer never stops learning, Engineers are the pillars of our civilisation! Good luck

Never say no. There is no project you pass, or turn down, or walk away from. Take every task head on and don't be afraid to ask the folks with experience questions. The moment you start telling people it's too complicated is the moment you've demonstrated you have no initiative and no desire to learn. Mechanical Engineering is a giant jigsaw puzzle and sometimes you just have to jump in and do it.

At certain point individual contribution does not help, we need the a team to perform. And for a team to perform first need to form a Team from a group of people working for a common goal. lt is possible only by developing trust & believe, sharing responsibilities and watching each others back.

Team work is what engineering is principally about, in my experience it takes a team of diverse individuals having specialized on different aspects and often times of different engineering disciplines to ensure the sucess of a project. For example in the commissioning of a refinery tank farm, it involves sub teams from electrical, instruments,operations and mechanical disciplines thus forming one multidisciplinary team to achieve the said objective. As the electrical teams work on provision of power to the right stations at the required voltage and current, instruments ensure all sensors and tranmistters are positioned as required, operations are of course there to run the pumps and mixers while Mechanical for installation and maintenance.

Agree, Team work is a must, without collaboration cooperation and communication it is difficult to execute any plan. Work with your team, know their potential and leverage it for betterment.

One thing I've come to realise is that any Engineer who fails to move with time and the technological advancements we get is bound to be tagged obsolete. Failure to adapt and learn new technology can affect your ability to contribute to a project effectively. An example is the use of CAD (Computer Aided Design), in a maintenance team i had the opportunity of working with, we had situations where the drawing of a component was required, the team opted to draw with hand even with the availability of the systems datasheet pdf which gives the abilty to simply extract this pdf drawing a CAD software like Solidworks where the component drawing can be easily isolated and printed out. This occured a result of a lack in CAD knowledge
