What I have found is to look at a more holistic approach. Software and tools knowledge is great, but I feel those are also skills that can be learned quickly on the job. Other areas such as Problem Solving with project examples, conflict management, and leadership styles and examples I feel can lead to a better idea of how the Project Manager would fit into an organization, rather than if they can use a specific set of software.

In my experience, I like to assess skills in the interview process, but I consider skills to be different from knowledge. So for me, rather than asking about frameworks, tools or techniques, I assess interpersonal and team skills, such as conflict management, decision making, emotional intelligence, leadership, facilitation, negotiation, among others. Knowledge and experience are also important, but I give more weight to these types of skills.

Some questions can be : Project Scope: What are the primary objectives and deliverables of the project? Stakeholders: Who are the key stakeholders and decision-makers? Timeline: What are the major milestones and deadlines? Resources: What resources (budget, team, tools) are available? Challenges: What are the anticipated challenges or risks? Success Criteria: How will project success be measured? Communication: What is the preferred communication and reporting structure? Support: What kind of support can I expect from leadership? Culture: How does the team handle conflict and collaboration? Past Performance: Can you share examples of previous projects and their outcomes?

I love to ask simple questions like “what’s your favorite type of art?” or “what meal you find easiest to prepare?”. It is a question that candidates are not ready for but shows me easily if they are annoyed by unpredictable moments and how well they handle them. Do they ask follow up questions to understand me better or can they handle listening to client and addressing all their concerns? This will show you better their problem solving skills and ability to adapt to new situations.

Cuando se analiza un proyecto desde el principio en muchos casos se puede intuir donde pueden fallar los procesos. Los problemas aparecen súbitamente y aunque resolverlos es un arte porque implica mover muchas fichas y muchos casos modificar tareas paralelas. I consider this question to be a two-way street. It is very difficult to evaluate a candidate with the answer that determines whether we are talking about leaders or project managers. They will surely have a clear answer focused on the profession, however, I like to see the relationship of their answer vs. the company's vision

Esta es una pregunta compleja, porque muchas veces las respuesta pueden ser mal interpretada. Hay que tener muy claro que se quiere encontrar en un gestor de proyectos. Las tareas que se asumen como director de proyectos en muchas ocasiones no son fáciles y requieren dar soluciones agresivas o ser tímido en compromisos por intereses propios del proyecto y de la empresa. Al final la resolución de problemas, las comunicaciones internas, el manejo de riesgos y sobre todo la búsqueda de resultados son cosas que la da la experiencia y muchas ocasiones no son fáciles de ver en una sola entrevista.
