Being a Technical Support in IT is a continuous learning journey because of the fast paced and ever growing technologies nowadays. Keep your heads up and always improve from time to time in order to stay updated.

During my tenure at Tata Consultancy Services for the Ahold Delhaize Netherlands ServiceNow account, our team was asked to fill out a spreadsheet detailing our career aspirational job roles and long-term goals for the yearly appraisal. As a newcomer to TCS, I initially had no specific goals in mind, unlike some of my teammates who listed aspirations in BI, ServiceNow HR management modules & ITOM modules. Instead, I chose to focus on receiving new story requirements within the project, including CMDB, Service Portal, SI- hub, record producers, and event management modules. My goal was to explore different ServiceNow modules & master the tool rather than targeting specific roles like Python developer, Java developer, or network engineer.

If you are so enthralled by the myriad of career choices, take the time to discuss and research the possibilities in front of you! My daughter had plans to become a teacher- until she found out about all the paperwork involved! Often uniformed decisions lead to an unhappy career path.

Prepare points to articulate by: ? Expressing interest. Discuss specific areas of technical support that you aim. ? Setting goals. Outline short-term and long-term career objectives. ? Seeking guidance. Ask for advice on skill development or opportunities within the company. ? Aligning with company vision. Connect your aspirations to the company's goals.

Usually your workplace will ask you about your choices to improve your skillset in the coming year. Start discussing what you like and don’t like with your lead or manager as soon as you know about this part of your review. Make your career path a discussion subject with your manager throughout the year. If you are new to the field, this shows your manager you care and you genuinely want to succeed. Senior staff enjoy sharing knowledge and giving input, so seek these people and viewpoints out so you have some knowledge about where your current actions and career path can take you. If that is not what you want, the input from your seniors can help focus your energies for success and happiness!

Do not forget to: ? Show passion. Communicate your genuine interest in technical support and related fields. ? Highligh motivation. Explain what drives your career goals and why they matter to you. ? Share excitement. Discuss how achieving your aspirations will contribute positively to team and company goals. ? Demonstrate commitment. Express willingness to learn and grow within the organization.

In my experience, verbalizing your career aspirations to your supervisor is a good thing. But if this is about getting ahead - advancing your career, getting higher titles, and getting paid more, it helps to pay attention to the priorities of your organization, and to contribute to them! If there's something new your leadership says is a priority, learn about it. If there is a new committee forming to tackle a project, volunteer to be on it. If there are skill sets your supervisor says are valuable, develop yourself in them. Your aspirations are meaningful to you, and may not be aligned with your current employer. Which is okay! But don't develop yourself on a path that's not important to your employer and expect a promotion.

In my experience, consider sharing a personal anecdote about your journey for technical support. Maybe it's a story about how you tackled a challenging issue that sparked your interest, or how you've proactively sought out learning opportunities to deepen your skills. Personalizing your aspirations shows not just enthusiasm, but also dedication and a proactive attitude towards your career growth. It helps your supervisor understand your objectives and motivations better, fostering a stronger connection and support for your goals.
