Here's how you can analyze and evaluate the causes of failure in your CSR career effectively.

In my experience, CSR efforts don’t yield sustainable results when the motivation is selfish. When CSR investments are motivated by a brand/marketing strategy with the bottom line in mind, the results are poor. But when CSR programs are designed to stand in the community gaps, to help them with a development need that the communities have identified; the CSR investment grows the people, who in turn add value to the corporation.

Too many companies still 'talk the talk' vs 'walk the walk.' In my decades of work on corporate social responsibilty, very few enterprises really took the steps to embed their CSR initiatives within their core business model. Unless, they do it's still 'window-dressing' or 'green-washing.'

As far as i get involved with this in my career the base and ground work is important, understanding the market dynamics. pre research is important, surveys are key components, in my opinion many many CSR projects get failed before kick off, reason being lack of research, wrong target market, less stakeholder involvement, apart from that another main factor is eager to get finish line without setting milestones. when u didn't distribute in steps, how it is possible to get final results.

Stakeholder input is essential to pressure test the ambition and impact of your strategy. CSR has now evolved and the focus is on sustainable business, future resilience and what your organization can uniquely contribute to and impact at scale.

The failure of CSR is often because ‘stakeholders’ are not seen as independent actors with their own aspirations and challenges. They are too often tokens in the planning stages, and only seen through the lens of ‘beneficiaries’ during implementation. When it comes time to assess impact they are sources of data to be extracted. CSR is only successful when there is real involvement of the stakeholders at every stage of the process and their aspirations and challenges are central.

In the book, Mobilizing Minds, the concept of motivation and reward is discussed extensively. In fact, their research concludes that designing an effective stakeholder blueprint is no different than a plan to grow a business and it’s based on these 4 steps: 1- Diagnosis and Directional Strategy 2- Design 3 - Prototype 4 - Scale In my experience, the value of prototypes in underrated and a good CSR plan must include a mechanism to invite diverse audiences to participate and make course corrections when needed. This practice also increases engagement which is key to any effective CSR initiative.

The quantitative and qualitative data for monitoring and timely corrections will help alignment of program objectives and impact.

No doubt, data analysis is a powerful tool in understanding CSR failures. Data driven decisions are often likely to predict the success of the project. Once you have implemented qualitative and quantitative measures, it acts as a guiding force. For example, a company might have initiated a CSR project aimed at improving literacy rates in a rural area, projecting a 20% increase in student reading levels over a year. If data analysis shows only a 5% improvement, examining factors such as the quality of teaching materials, teacher training, student attendance, and community involvement can reveal underlying issues. Understanding these discrepancies enables the company to refine its approach and design more effective educational interventions.

Analyze and reflect on, both positive and negative, trends in Quantitative, and impact in Qualitative data. Make sure you comparisons include baseline data.

management typically manages CSR in organization. The reason for this is the allocation & planning funds. On the other hand, there are certain compliance protocols that require adherence. management select individuals to oversee CSR activities who can operate under their direct supervision. Management are often contacted by NGOs & community members to seek support for their cause & then management allocates funds accordingly. Some organizations to have family managing their CSR activity. The process of CSR may not be full proof, big or small organizations manage CSR as an important activity. Like other business verticals/areas, this CSR activity needs mention in Organogram and run like dept. as per fund & org. size.

Ensure process is not missing, the evaluation tools/frameworks to map emotional and behavioral and relational aspects of the stakeholders interactions towards CSR initiatives.

Consistence Conversation and Constructive Communication with multiple stakeholders is very crucial to understand Collaborators and avoid crisis to succeed in CSR initiatives.

Based on my own experience, I'm inclined to think that you need to communicate effectively in your CSR career and that helps to prevent quite a few failures. Please remember that you often work on a project mode in CSR and failure to communicate at the right time can be disastrous. While working with project teams or with stakeholders, you need to be little proactive while communicating with your collegues and external clients as well. When failures happen during the course of an activity, perhaps the best response is to reflect on what went wrong with your communication. Let me also say that a quick root cause analysis to understand the failure mode of your communication is worth attempting. Repetitive failures can be avoided as well.

In India most of the CSR follows a ready-made set of charitable activities. Even they don't keep right people in the place to deliver the work. Their usual HR units looks after the CSR with very limited knowledge on development programs and community mobilization. So, the 1st and foremost thing for them is to come out of this temporary arrangement if they really want to do something great under the CSR works.
