Understand the Why. Whenever in a meeting or a situation where you need to do something, deliver something, my question is always : what are we trying to achieve here? what's the end goal? then break down the responses in chunks of achievable tasks, and set realistic expectations on delivery. In general there are scope creeps around every major project, making sure we understand what are we trying to achieve and what's the goal will always give us the right direction. both from a priority perspective but also defining the goals

Many a Engineering Manager have run down plants and equipment because they failed to listen, and in listening it also includes listening to criticism, the assumption that all critics are in the opposition is not always right, some critics take a hard line position because they don't want a reoccurrence of previously failed actions. To succeed an Engineering Manager must be able to work with and get the best out of both so called proponents and critics.
