It is my experience, that a survey can be kind of threatening to some volunteers. They feel checked upon and even controlled. I myself prefer a personal and informal way, a chat, a conversation during an annual BBQ or Christmas party. Working together with your volunteers on day-to-day tasks also creates a connection and opportunities to interact and can be very effective. Be a volunteer amongst your volunteers.

Aligning the expectations and goals of my volunteer team members is crucial to our project's success. First, I start by having an open discussion with everyone to understand their personal goals, motivations, and any concerns they might have. This helps me see how each member’s strengths and interests can best contribute to our overall mission. Next, I clearly outline the project's objectives and how each team member’s role fits into achieving those goals. I make sure everyone knows what’s expected of them and provide a detailed plan with specific tasks and deadlines.. Through clear communication, setting realistic expectations, and fostering a supportive environment I can ensure we’re all working towards the same goals.

Offering training and broadening your volunteers' perspective may seem expensive, but pays back double and works both ways. They keep on enjoying their work and you will have experienced and professional volunteers. It is a shame that often people are supposed to be paying for their training themselves. And not all volunteers know they can ask their 'boss' to pay for such expenses.

Just don't make it into a competition. This happens unintentionally sometimes. It may make some volunteers feel less than others. All are equal and should feel appreciated.
