Here's how you can align decision making with your organization's sustainability strategy.

-It's essential to fully understand and integrate this strategy into every aspect of your work. -Once the sustainability goals and practices become a natural part of your daily operations and thinking, making decisions that support these goals becomes automatic. -Essentially, by embedding the sustainability strategy into the core of your organization's activities and culture, every decision made will naturally contribute to these sustainable objectives without needing to consciously align each time. -This makes sustainability a standard consideration in every choice and action within the organization.

I've seen organizations trying to stablish commitments that were not aligned with their materiality and two things happened: 1) The goals were not SMART*, therefore the implementation very weak, close to #greenwashing. 2) Goals were not implemented at all, as the organization later realized that the topic was not a priority. With that said: 1) Start with a double materiality assessment to identify strategic topics, with stakeholder engagement 2) Set SMART* goals for the topics identified. *Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound

Sustainability policy should be developed with SMART Goals and communicated at all levels from higher Management to lower levels. Policy objectives should be clearly defined and assigned. Tracking of the progress towards the achievement of the specified and defined golas.

I think it's important to assess the impact of each decision on long-term sustainability goals. For instance, when choosing suppliers, if possible and budget allows it, I would prioritize those with sustainable practices, because this aligns with reducing our environmental footprint. Also, I think it's important to be transparent about what we're doing and to set ourselves some clear targets to measure our progress. This way, we can make sure that sustainability isn't just a side project, but is at the heart of our business strategy.

As I mentioned in my previous response, an important step is to understand how your decisions impact your sustainability goals, but also, you need to understand how your sustainability goals and strategy impact your business and decisions. Of course, the magnitude of the impact is also important. By having such an understanding - through tools like risk assessment, life cycle assessment, sustainability audits, and various others - you can make well-informed decisions with clear expectations and preventive/corrective measures ready to respond to any unintended risks/outcomes.

Stakeholder engagement and stakeholder dialog are important to get an objective external view of sustainability topics. In the case of CSRD for example external stakeholders can be a valuable source of assessing the importants of all ESRS topics, subtopics and subsubtopics and in addition also provide valuable insides about impacts which can influence their decision making with regard to your company. They can be also a valuable and neutral validator of your material topics.

As I mentioned in my first response on this article, it is important to link the sustainability strategy to the overall strategy. Accordingly, you should identify and define specific sustainability criteria that can be measured and assessed to integrate into every decision to be made. This allows you to easily integrate sustainability into your organisation's operational system and decision making. Various sustainability frameworks are available to assist with the identification of best practices and key performance indicators so you can develop criteria in accordance with that!

To truly embed sustainability into these operational processes, it's important to think about the behaviour changes required. Just writing a new policy or process won't result in change. Engage with the people who are running this process to help them understand the rationale behind the changes, and hear their feedback on what might work or not. Once the new policies / processes are rolled out then continue to monitor what's working and not. Talk to the people on the ground to understand what could be done to make the processes / policies more effective.

Systems integration is very important in order to automatize and support valuable processes and thus decision making. Integration of the organizational, operational and IT (!) systems is crucial in order to enhance the efficiency within the company. Never isolate your sustainability strategy from your corporate strategy. It will limit your implementation and success. Integrate your sustainability ambitions and culture into other systems in the organisation - from risk management to governance, to procurement to business development.

It is very important to educate and train your employees and stakeholders on your sustainability strategy and its impact on your organisation's business and operations. With high awarness and understanding on this topic, you can better involve your employees and stakeholders into the decision making and in turn, increase the level of integration of sustainability into the decision making process. This leads also leads to higher levels of transparency and accountability within your organisation.

Knowledge is empowering. Educating your employees will empower them to take ownership and need to not compel to exemplify the sustainability culture you expect of them.

We have to be mindful of Results communication, inclusive communication that speaks the language of various decision-making powers. At the conclusion of any activity or project, clear, open, and easy-to-understand communication about the impacts of the sustainability project has to be prepared for a public audience, financial decision-makers, Marketing departments, and Human resources, each has their own language to define impact and you have to be mindful of this.

Setting the tone from the top is always a good start, leadership must be clear in setting a clear and inspiring sustainability vision and mission of the company.Senior executives are navigating complex terrains of sustainable Development and are expected to ensure profitability and responsibility are not mutually exclusive.You must create sustainability champion's, who can assist to drive for cultural change through out the organization. Incorporate sustainability into corporate performance metrics such as reducing emissions, waste , or water usage and align these KPIs to executives compensation. It also helps to align rewards system for the whole organization with sustainability goals. Also provide sustainability workshops continuously.

It's advisable that as much as possible you make your sustainability strategy a part of your business strategy. This way, when you are making business decisions you inherently have to consider sustainability issues.
