When serving the public, we know that there are things we need to do to fix things, we have opinions even as government employees. But most of us didn't get involved in public administration to just be "part" of the government, we did it to be part of the change that makes life better for our communities. If you see something that can be fixed and help the citizens of your community, say something. Volunteer to study the issue and find resolutions that could work. Many public sector leaders shy away from adding work, but you should embrace it if the end result improves the way you govern and provide services to your community.

I do believe that embracing risk is part of advancing public work, but at the same time, these risks have to be bounded by clear boundaries and limitations. i have worked as a diplomat for around 10 years, including consular sections, and protocol, and you can take minimal risks in these domains, but you can innovate.

There is also usually someone who could be interested in your perspectives but may be too timid to ask. You may have some positive shortcuts or helpful insights that would assist another who has joined or may not be as seasoned. And if you’re a more mature professional I recommend seeking a young member of your team to reverse mentor you in something they know a lot about and you don’t! This may be how young people are using technology to interact and communicate for instance. Reverse mentoring is very helpful to your perspective if you’re experienced and may have limited opportunity to interact with younger generations.

Having a mentor helps one to grow and expand their knowledge and perspectives. And a lot of times we talk about finding a mentor, but much less of becoming one or reverse mentoring. My experience of becoming a mentor made me grow much more and made me self aware. I would encourage one to consider both options (becoming a mentor or reverse mentoring if it's the case) to continue growing in their career and personal development.

Taking the time at the end of your day or week to record your reflections - preferably in a written journal because there is some science associated with the practice of physically writing and its impact on your brain - is recommended by researchers and something I’ve found useful too. When reflecting thinking about what worked well, what didn’t and why you think that was the case…. As well as what you would try to do differently next time … are good things to write down. Also what you’re proud of (as we constantly focus on weaknesses rather than celebrating wins), and who you helped this week and what feedback you got… is also useful. There’s plenty of ideas on the interwebs - happy reflections all!

Find your counterparts in academia, non profits, and private sectors and see how they address issues. By innovating your sources of inspiration you bring new perspectives that provide opportunities all around. Getting out of an echo chamber helps get you noticed.
