Here's how you can address a question about your weaknesses during an interview.

As some of the other contributors already pointed out, when asked about a weakness during an interview, I typically use a strength that could also be viewed as a weakness. For example, "I pay an inordinate amount of attention to detail." (Which could be seen as being a perfectionist!) But what's the weakness side of that? It might delay a project. Then you have to reflect on that weakness and talk about what you need to address to fix that weakness. For example, "I realize that just like a startup, I need to release the MVP to get it in other people's hands for feedback so that the project can move to the next step." Always show you understand how that weakness can impact your work and what you're doing to address that weakness.

Over my career, I've realized one of my growth areas is balancing multiple projects while maintaining focus. My enthusiasm often leads me to take on too much at once, sometimes causing delays or less-than-optimal results. To address this, I've been working on prioritizing tasks better and setting realistic boundaries. I'm using project management tools more effectively, delegating more, and asking for team support when needed. By improving in this area, I've boosted my productivity and learned the importance of balance and delegation. It's an ongoing journey, but I'm committed to continually refining my approach.

Honesty matters and vulnerability that is connected to self reflection and growth is key when answering this question. Using a narrative makes the answer not a standalone ‘strike against’ or ‘future concern.’ Like… “ One weakness, my colleagues and supervisors have pointed out in previous conversations/reviews is my tendency to _____. I have sought to ask questions about how to anticipate those situations and respond in healthier ways. The counsel and advice I received from those trusted colleagues included…“ By using terms like “tendency“ and articulation of the issue within a context of working relationships and ongoing development, you can be honest and open about the weakness but also note your ability to listen and pivot!

Honestly is often the best policy - but message it right. In the current hiring mindset, no one appreciates those who share half-baked truths or overcooked pretense. I as a hiring manager personally look for individuals who are vocally self-critical, and high on integrity as they don't need impetus to reinvent themselves the push comes from within. We need genuine, scalable talent and not ready-made corporate mannequins. So project yourself with constructive criticism with real examples to drive the point than to build a larger than life perfect image.

For me, weakness is a learning opportunity! I reframe my weakness into what I’m doing to overcome it. I narrate the incident, its impact, what was my learning and how I overcome. In today’s context, having a learning mindset and overcoming your challenges is very important for organisations.

Share your weakness in the most honest way & also the steps you are taking to overcome the same. Be confident while doing so & do not have a lengthy list of weak points to share too. Be well prepared before the interview & you should be able to do it!

One of the examples I use is to say “I am a perfectionist which means I spend a lot of fine tuning things to perfection however sometimes closure is required in a short period of time hence I am training my mind to focus on critical things while letting the others go with grace” These types of honest answers actually frame a weakness as a positive thing.

Do share a skill you want to improve on that will enhance your role. Say you're in public relations, you may be good at the writing element of the role but would like to improve on presentation skills, do say you would like to an opportunity to be involved in more pitches to enhance this skill

How do you take what can be viewed as a negative and turn it into a positive? The best way is to admit that you are not perfect, but always striving for improvement. An example I often use, with total honestly, that does just that: sometimes I have to swallow pride and ask for help when I've taken on more than I can handle. I have a hard time saying 'no' when asked to help in a project that might be out of my area. This had led to a situation where I have taken on more than I can achieve. In these cases, I am learning how to reach out to others for assistant, and admitting perhaps I should have politely declined due to bandwidth. This answer shows admittance, but also that I have a willingness to always assist when asked. A win-win.

Every employer wants a staff or an employee that has adaptability, always evolving, and has practical track records. You should be open to learning and improving on your skills. There's no employer that has interest in a stagnant candidate or employee.

I took a lot of interviews and one thing I hate when an interviewee tries to hide his weaknesses behind excuses. So I would suggest not to show excuses rather than own it. If you start showing excuses for serious things, you will find that you have started showing excuses for silly things as well. So avoid showing excuses.

I know that, so before I treat a piece of writing as complete, I get a peer to review it from the perspective of the target audience, and identify which parts add least value. That process helps me shorten the piece, helps me stay relaxed about taking on feedback, builds stronger collaboration, and sometimes my peer reviewer learns a few niche details! ?? Overwriting is a definite weakness, and I will never 'learn my way' out of it, so my choice of self-management tactics can show off a separate strength.
