I have always viewed this question as asking about an area of strength that can be improved or recent learning which paves way for new realities and not necessarily something a candidate has failed at. It has to be approached tactically and objectively with a definite positive impact on the selection process in mind.

Good question if you know who you are. I was asked this question as a young man and it was the reason I that I became my own boss. When asked I said that my two basic weaknesses were that #1 That I was always totally honest in my personal and business life. #2 I always said what I thought and did hold back. When they responded and said they didn’t think being honest and saying what I thought were flaws and to try again, I simply said, I don’t give a shit what you think.

An experienced interviewer can smell a "canned response" and cliche pretty quickly so be mindful of your audience ie responses need to be tailored. You should have formed a sense for the person and culture of the company and skills they want. Your "weakness" shouldn't undermine a key skill that they are seeking in the role. Everyone has weaknesses so dont be afraid to be honest but dont leave that as their last impression and always address how you mitigate it so they can see you are self aware and proactive in addressing it ie I can be impatient as i am result orientainted but have learned to count to ten!

When I am the interviewer I do not ask this question. The question is always asked "what are your strengths"? That is followed up with me letting them know why I do not ask about weaknesses, because I believe if the focus is on strengths it keeps them honest. When the role is reversed I calmly say we are all human and humans all have weaknesses, I just do my best in whatever situation I happen to be in.
