In my opinion and having finished the LA trainings recently, what i feel is that IT audit procedures when standardized help the auditor and auditee to understand what is to be audited, based upon what document and what is not to be checked. So this firstly helps the auditee to prepare well, helps the auditor to complete his/her task within timelines. Standardized audit procedures also saves possible conflict situation as many a times auditor may like to check certain things using certain procedure while auditee may not be comfortable with that, hence they may have misunderstandings.

Based upon my experience with IT audit procedures two very important things are firstly applicability of entire audit procedure and aspects in one single form to all departments or organisations; secondly is the need of review periodically based upon introduction of new technologies/devices/upgrades. What i have seen in my career is that you cant be too soft in audit as auditee will prevail over you and similarly cant be too rigid as it will always be an unpleasant experience for all.
