Here's a reality check: you have been adapting to technology change your entire life. What most folks fail to contemplate is that pervasiveness of change and its impact on their lives. Think of your career as chapters of change. Scrutinize each segment carefully, querying the dominant tech changes in each one. Reflect on how you thought about that change and how you responded to it. Journalize those reflections. Once you have them down on paper, think about the common themes and how they connect over the years. Guarantee you'll be amazed.

The issue of adapting to new technology isn't about whether you're late or early in your career. That’s a myth. It’s about how long you've been working with one organization or how much exposure you’ve had to new offerings. People “only know what they know.” From my experience, the real challenge lies in being confined to a single company's "bubble." I've worked with companies still using outdated software and tech platforms simply because they weren't aware of the latest offerings or have the “we’ve always done it this way” attitude. My advice is to make staying current a priority. It's crucial to make time to learn and stay updated with the latest advancements, whether you're a first-year professional or a veteran of many years.

Never stop learning. After my PhD, I made the mistake of pausing my growth. I thought that I had achieved the heights. But there's always more to learn.

Une chose que j’ai trouvé utile lorsque que je me suis remise en affaires après 25 ans passées à des postes de direction générale, c’est de revisiter mon mode vie. Dans le feu de l’action durant notre carrière, on se laisse facilement tromper par l’impression d’être plus efficace en agissant promptement et en gardant un rythme effréné et peu de sommeil. En misant sur le 20 % de ce que je fais le mieux et en apprenant des techniques de slowpreneuriat, j’atteins maintenant de meilleurs résultats en moins de temps, avec moins de efforts et plus de disponibilité pour ce qui est vraiment important pour moi.

Adapting to the changing technological landscape in a late career can be challenging but very much achievable. From my practical experience what I have realised the importance of continuous learning cannot be overstated. I have actively pursued online certifications in various cutting-edge methodologies, frameworks which have not only expanded my skills but also increased my confidence to a different level. Apart from that, I have made it a point to attend online workshops on a regular basis. These sessions have been invaluable for staying updated, connecting people with similar experience and broader my horizon by networking. I have not only stayed relevant but also found renewed excitement and purpose in my professional journey.

AI is the big technological change everyone needs to adapt to, no matter where they’re at in their careers. The best advice I’ve heard is to dive in and get your hands dirty, meaning play around with GenAI tools, get an OpenAI account, test out ChatGPT, etc.. Someone at a recent event I attended (the Boston GenAI Meetup) said, “Ask ChatGPT to write you a curriculum to teach you about AI. You can choose the grade level.” Someone else at the same event introduced me to the DeepLearning.AI course “AI for Everyone” as a helpful starting point. It’s tough to get comfortable with AI because the pace of change is so fast, so the best we can do is to embrace the change and commit to learning and studying, as we all watch to see what unfolds next.

We should all strive for continuous improvement. Stay engaged in your industry and in others relevant to your business. Ask questions and hire young. Don’t be afraid of reverse mentoring and have someone a bit younger than you teach you a life lesson.

Early in my career I helped to build and install an information retrieval network using CD-ROMs (boy, that dates me...) The network, surprisingly worked perfectly. I hadn't taken into account user behaviour when on day 1 someone tried to print out an entire cd-rom database of info. Reflecting on this, now thankfully makes smile. The questions arising from it are: * When have I had to adapt to new technology previously? * What we're the successes? * What had to be adapted? * What could have been done better? * What did I learn? For me the big take-away was to consider the possibilities of user behaviour.

For someone who doesn't have a technical background in IT like myself, learning through real life stories/case studies definitely helped me a lot to stay updated on technological advancements. A 15 min chat helps me understand on AI more than 1hr watching training videos.

Well !! One can utilize LinkedIn to show connections at desired companies and send relevant messages. Considering former colleagues and buddies as valuable networking connections. One can also attend smaller events/ get togethers to build comfort and competence in networking scenarios. And Yes whatever you do , do it in serious manner, only that will help for smart networking.

Ah, I am officially old according to LI, haha. Age is an attitude of mind and does not define who struggles with technological changes. It is often forgotten that the more mature among us saw the genesis of many of these 'new' technologies and have followed their evolution with the advantage of understanding where they came from and how they were built. To my mind, the only thing that limits anyone when considering any change, including technology, is their willingness to be curious. I am often surprised at how uncurious people are. So my advice? Be curious, be flexible and come to new experiences with an open mind and remember that experience is gold and can be VERY advantageous when bringing perspective to a new situation.

I completely agree that flexibility is essential in adapting to technological changes. However, my concern is whether the organization leadership or senior management will allow that freedom. In my current organization, we often face strict oversight, which can stifle experimentation and innovation.

I recently attending an event where Cassandra Worthy was presenting. She is a Change Enthusiast and her methodology is applicable to all forms of change, including welcoming new technology. She has a catch phrase that really resonated with me - Get Bitter or Get Better. As a late-career person, it would be easy for me to say, bah humbug, I don't need to learn about new tech, what got me here will suit for the remaining years that I have. But, that would be a mistake. I'm always striving to Get Better, to embrace the new and find out how it can help me be a stronger leader for the people around me.

Staying positive is gold. Why? Because feelings, emotions, and words are contagious. If you stick to the positive side of your feelings and words you will hold yourself in a positive spiral upwards. Yes, because the contagiousness is not only towards others but towards yourself too. So keep smiling and your new technology work will become fun and rewarding!

Positive outlook or positive view of reality? Toxic positivity can cause harmfull expectations.The rapid changing economic and technologies are really frustrating. What could be very helpfull - to allow yourself recognise how much time you need to learn, to adapt, to starting using. And the best outlook that I always suggest for my clients or for the participants of my trainings - you can go slowly, just move on and continue your path.

One thing I have found useful is learning from younger colleagues. A mix of one's age , experience and the same from younger colleagues can help create winning approaches for many situations.

I think it's essential to be feeling good physically, mentally, emotionally and energetically to be able to stay successful in your personal and professional life. Develop a consistent selfcare routine that tends to your body, mind, emotions and energy. This could include exercise, therapy, active and passive meditation techniques, breathwork, sound healing, reiki, acupuncture, and more.

Consider being prepared to look for help. You have the experience in management and leadership - allow younger people to shin and boost you by sharing their technological know how.

Never stop learning. Stay abreast of the industry trends, take a shot at learning a few new tools and apps here and there and don't fear technology. It's not your foe but a friend.
