Even if during a situational interview question, the first thing that comes to mind is a scenario that you didn’t handle in the best way, admitting that as well as discussing how you grew from a failed moment, shows authenticity and self-awareness! Situational interview questions are more about discovering who you are as a person…not to determine if you are perfect!

Striking a balance between self-promotion and authenticity in interviews is essential. Genuine responses to situational questions, supported by real-life examples, not only demonstrate your skills but also your integrity. Exaggeration can backfire, as experienced interviewers are skilled at discerning authenticity. Being truthful helps establish a foundation of trust, making a lasting, positive impression that could enhance your likelihood of securing the position. Remember, credibility once lost is hard to regain.

Focusing on what you've learned from past experiences will always provide a better lens to reexplore those situations. Showing, not only how you overcome difficulties but also how you change your approach from then on is the point of reflecting on past problems.

However, it's equally important to maintain authenticity and honesty in responses, as being an experienced interviewer myself I’m often adept at discerning scripted answers from genuine ones. I always see embracing these questions as opportunities to demonstrate one's capabilities rather than stumbling blocks as it can significantly enhance a candidate's chances of success.
