Scope creep can really begin to happen outside of the production day itself. When estimating for a shoot, its important to understand how much work will be done in pre and post production, and using your past experience can really help in gauging how much time will be needed. Is the creative done or will that be squeezed into meetings and ultimately land on you to adjust? Will the entire "library" of images be edited, or is there an agreed upon number? With a better understanding of the pre and post production, you can start to form an idea of how long those processes will actually take you. Because retouching is quoted at price/image, it allows me to set a clear boundary, while allowing the potential for the client to add more.

If I'm creating a look book for a client, or portrait shots in the studio, I have to take into account, Make-up, setting up lights, backdrops, set design, wardrobe and so forth. Every case is different and treat it on a shoot by shoot basis, and if it's a simply shoot, I generally allocate an hour per look. So if a client is expecting 5 looks, generally I will quote 5 hours. Of course, it all depends on the complexity of the what we are trying to convey. But for the most part, this is what I've come to use as a baseline, an adjust accordingly, of course it also depends on the number of talent.
