The prepared procurement group will have a supplier listing for all products required in their business line. The suppliers list or bid list should have a limit set on the specific product they supply. This limit say 4 suppliers will allow the list to be updated quarterly and deep dives once a year if not in use. I am also a firm believer of regular physical visits to the office of the supplier. This can be full blown audit or an update. The executive involvement from the supplier and the buyers team is dependent on the value or criticality (schedule) of the product, there are many avenues to pursue and any of them contribute to minimizing the effect of issues during the life of the purchase
