A few things I’ve found helpful is to have a clear and defined purpose for the team members, that they know they have an important task they are responsible for and someone will use their work in their workflow. With a regular check in, even for a few minutes, you discuss the current tasks and listen and respond to whatever comes up in conversation. It’s still important if possible to meet in person for both a social perspective and to innovate, ideate and compare processes and routines with colleagues and peers. Empathy and defining purpose goes a long way when managing people.

I focus on maintaining high morale and motivation in remote teams through regular communication and a strong team culture. Open channels keep everyone connected, while virtual team-building activities foster camaraderie. Recognizing achievements boosts morale, and I offer flexibility to help employees balance work and personal lives. It's essential to provide a clear purpose for each team member, so they understand the impact of their work. Regular check-ins allow us to discuss tasks and encourage open dialogue. While virtual interactions are crucial, I also value in-person meetings for building relationships and sparking innovation. Empathy and purpose are key to effective management.

Remote or hybrid is truly here to stay depending on the industry and cultural vision. Remote work can be managed effectively as long as the management teams are committed to engagement and modification of accessibility and access to staff and wellness initiatives. The creation and commitment to psychological safety and staff empowerment are crucial!!! The ability to have real and meaningful connections and conversations requires a unique skill set and management style that truly paces people first.

Use effective communication. There is no such thing as too much communication especially when working with a remote team. They need to feel attached, valued, relevant and respected. You need to be the example you would wish from a leader if you were their their shoes. You need to set clear achieveable objectives and allow your team the opportunities to demonstrate progress through online one to one meetings with you. Offer positive feedback when earned and ensure that all your team know you are always available to listen. Implement team building activities ( there are lots of options for online training now) to keep everyone motivated and make working with you and for you not only fulfilling but fun too!
