Every company must perform a thorough ANNUAL review of all SECURITY POLICIES (and all other IT policies as well). This may also require possibly audit/legal help & nice way to update is to make a PROJECT & get inputs from multiple areas. Secondarily, always update immediately after a major new change (like AI or cloud being used for 1st time). Written up-to-date security policies have a key business purpose. Just as there is a need to "read the manual" or instructions to put something together -- they specifically define what folks can & cannot do from a security perspective. Important Security PLANS also need annual review. This includes DR, & Contingency Plan, Security Incident Response Plan, Malware Response plan, etc.

SECURITY TRAINING is vital need to do rapidly changing new technology & more crafty attacks by the "bad guys". TRAIN STAFF - companies need to invest more $$$ here to send folks to key conferences/training classes. Or even allow time & set goals to complete free training available from vendor, u-tube, ALISON, etc. If security staff doesn't keep up, risks increase for a future violation. Security is only as strong as team behind it & good to invest in training TRAIN USERS - Active security awareness program is a must. While most users have better IT knowledge today, security could be only as strong as your weakest user. Security might be improved thru: Monthly brief newsletters, an intranet security web site, and TEAMS/ZOOM trainer

The bigger question is who in the company owns the risk of non-conformance? The cybersecurity team or the non-conforming team/team-member? This is a never-ending argument and the answer is usually, "it depends". TL;DR: Make sure that you have done your due diligence, you have kept document trail of evidence of your due-diligence AND you have communicated that trail up-and-down-and-sideways in the org. This is rarely a technical problem. It is a political game.
