Dealing with an indecisive client in coaching sessions. Are you struggling to provide constant validation?
When faced with an indecisive client in coaching, it's essential to empower them without becoming their crutch for decision-making. Try these strategies:
- Ask open-ended questions that encourage self-reflection, helping clients uncover their own desires and decisions.
- Set clear boundaries to prevent dependency on your validation for every choice they consider.
- Provide tools for decision-making, such as pros-and-cons lists or scenario planning, to build their confidence.
How do you handle indecision with your clients? Feel free to share your approach.

Nobody is born with INDECISIVENESS ; it is a learned behaviour and a part of our conditioning. I would prefer giving a safe and a comfortable space to my client to help him self-reflect and open up about his history. ?? Where is it coming from? ?? Did either of the parents had this behavioural pattern during his childhood years? ?? How has been the client’s parents’ relation with decisions in their lives? More we gain awareness of where a behavioural pattern is coming from, less identified we feel with it. After gaining awareness, it is time to rewire and heal client’s relationship with DECISIONS using affirmations like : ?? I am capable of taking decisions. ?? I believe in my decisions. ?? I trust my inner voice.

Let’s bring some clarity to the question. Coaching sessions aren’t about making decisions; they’re spaces for exploration and creating radical actions. It's perfectly valid for clients to have multiple sessions without making any concrete decisions. The real issue arises when the coach steps into the role of validation—because then, there’s no coaching happening. A master coach doesn’t provide answers or validation; instead, they remain invisible, holding space and being with the client toward what feels true and valid for them. It’s about their journey, not the coach's validation.
-
True mastery in coaching comes from understanding that the process is not about driving clients to decisions but facilitating their exploration and growth. As coaches, our role is to hold space for clients to engage with their own truth and make decisions from a place of alignment. The temptation to validate or provide answers undermines clients' ability to access their wisdom. Instead, a powerful coach remains present and invisible, guiding clients toward clarity on their terms, and helping them take authentic action. The focus is not on the coach’s input, but on empowering clients to trust their journey.

Dealing with an indecisive client can drain your energy, especially when constant validation is expected. How do you guide them toward confident decision-making without undermining their progress? Help your client understand that making decisions is part of their growth journey. Encourage them to take responsibility for their choices by discussing potential outcomes and weighing the pros and cons together. Offer a clear framework for decision-making rather than simply validating every doubt. Set boundaries around seeking approval, so they learn to trust their judgment. By promoting ownership and providing structure, you can help indecisive clients gain confidence and reduce their reliance on constant validation.
-
With an indecisive client, it’s important to create an exploratory space where they feel comfortable contemplating various possibilities without any pressure to make a decision. As a coaches role is to introduce different perspectives and potential paths that they may not have previously seen This can often lead to a natural sense of initial confusion or indecision exploring new possibilities. Encourage to see this phase as a normal part of the coaching Decision-making doesn’t have to happen immediately; it’s about expanding their vision and helping them reflect. You’re there to guide them in opening their mind, rather than pushing them toward a conclusion. This approach allows them to make choices that feel authentic and empowering.
