Considering a career change to Computer Engineering?

Computer engineering merges computer science with electrical engineering, focusing on the development and enhancement of both hardware and software that constitute computer systems. As a computer engineer, I would work on designing microprocessors, personal computers, servers, and supercomputers. Additionally, the role involves working with embedded systems found in devices ranging from smartphones to spacecraft. A deep understanding of both the physical hardware and the software that controls it is essential, as optimizing system performance is a significant part of the job.

Engineering is about solving problems. CE is no exception. It's about turning vague ideas into perfectly defined solutions. A CPU won't care about what you wanted to mean. It can be a lot of time spent on research before you can start programming a solution. Again you can't impress a CPU with big words and technical terms. Finally, you'll need help to spawn the solution you engineered into reality. You must be one with the project, to be able to notice details and prevent others' mistakes that could cost lives. You must be strict at enforcing tried and tested techniques, and at the same time, be overly eager to find new paradigms that are emerging, in CE or other fields. Keeping up with the state of the art is of the essence of CE.

'Perfection can never be achieved" You do not require to be perfect to get into any field; Computer Engineering. The only thing which matters when you jump into a totally new concept is your hard work and dedication. Just make sure from Day 1 you atleast give 6 productive hours on your self to get your hands better at it. The basic skills you require are learning from programming languages. Make an habbit of focusing on project oriented learning if you learn a new concept make a project out of it. Hardwork gives you pressure handling ability and Dedication gives you constant motivation.

Transitioning to computer engineering requires a blend of skills. My proficiency in programming languages such as C++, Java, and Python gives me a solid foundation. However, I need to expand my knowledge of hardware design and gain a deeper understanding of operating systems, networks, and databases. Developing strong problem-solving skills, analytical thinking, and effective teamwork will also be crucial in this new role.

I am convinced that it is primordial to be an avid learner. You must enjoy learning about CE. And that must be your most developed skill. You don't just need to pass a few classes. You must focus on becoming a master learner. There is no single set of rules that you can learn and be set for life. The second you stop learning, you are falling behind quick. The hardware evolves and the software too. It is not uncommon to see for example new C++ developers fresh out of engineering school, code the way it was common to program in C++ in 2011. That is not acceptable. Be proactive, accept that feeling not good enough at something is always the first step. In a field evolving so fast, feeling like a beginner means you are on the path to mastery

My journey into computer engineering would likely begin with additional coursework or certifications in computer engineering or electrical engineering. Given my experience, pursuing a master’s degree or specialized certifications could further enhance my expertise and job prospects in this field.

I may be old school but I believe you can't do it on your own. Or you may be forever lacking insights the giants whose shoulders we are sitting on had decades ago. You'll need a solid math education to be able to understand the physics and the inner working of the algorithms. Abstract algebra, analysis, linear algebra... Physics is as much important, electrical engineering knowledge is required. You'll be surprised of how much what you thought was theoretical physics and math become the very core of active current applied research. You must be able to understand a computer from the electrons flowing inside the transistors, to the circuits allowing for complexity to emerge, and allowing us to write kernels, OSes, and then user applications.

There will always be a need for problem solvers. Their day to day life may change with technology, but being able to understand people and come up with a solution to their vaguely defined problem is a skill that will always be valued.

The job market for computer engineers is robust and diverse, offering opportunities in various industries including technology, healthcare, automotive, and aerospace. Companies are constantly seeking skilled professionals to develop innovative solutions and improve existing technologies. This demand aligns well with my career aspirations.

In computer engineering, daily tasks can vary widely depending on the specific role and industry. The work could involve designing new hardware, writing and testing software, troubleshooting existing systems, or collaborating with other engineers and developers to create integrated solutions. This variety is something I find particularly appealing. As I say to alot of people who ask me for advice, 2 questions everyday will add much more value to you as a programmer than 14 coding questions over a weekend. Consistency is the key

The career growth prospects in computer engineering are promising. With experience, I could advance to senior roles such as lead engineer, project manager, or even chief technology officer. Specializing in emerging fields like artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, or IoT (Internet of Things) could further enhance my career opportunities and salary potential.
