There is a significant difference between overlooking something and ignoring something. Ignoring plagiarism is a conscious choice and something which should not be tolerated. By ignoring plagiarism, you are complicit in this violation and steps should be taken. Using the official channels to identify the academic misconduct and allowing the process to run is the best course of action

Plagiarism is an issue that is controlled by the policies and the regulations of the institution. Academic Institutions are implementing policies to assure the limitation of plagiarised work. Certain limits are accepted and an eye of an expert beside the available softwares are usually implemented. In our organisation, the Plagiarism policy is stated in each course syllabus and hence, the instructor should apply it. However, it is very important to consider the reasons that makes students copy other's work. It is very important to assure that students understand the value of academic integrity. Students should also be capable to think and write using their own words, which i think lacking this skill is the main reason of Plagiarism.

I hold a firm stance against plagiarism and would never collaborate with a colleague who knowingly overlooks it. Integrity is non-negotiable in creative and academic pursuits, and I have always maintained this principle in my work. Plagiarism undermines originality, stifles innovation, and compromises ethical standards. I also recognise that concerns about artificial intelligence often center around its potential misuse to propagate unoriginal ideas. As an educator, I take this responsibility seriously, teaching my students not just the tools but also the methodologies to ensure they never resort to unethical practices. My goal is to cultivate a mindset of creativity, accountability, and respect for intellectual property.

Everyone is jumping onto how to stop or penalize plagiarism. But there are 2 scenarios here- First, that the student didn't learn what they were supposed to learn because they plagiarized. So the student pays hefty fees, and then chooses to plagiarize rather than learn! The question to the institution then is- have you become an degree certifying agency rather than a place of learning? What about your content and pedagogy is creating this situation. Second, there are ways of learning by copying. It is plagiarism only when the copying is not acknowledged. Why not redesign the assignment in such a manner that it involves copying, acknowledging and adding the learners own voice.

To start with, I would have a general discussion with him/her highlighting the effect plagiarizing has on cultivating originality and innovation on the students. How it becomes unfair to those who work hard. If it does not help, then direct approach and involving ethics committee may be considered.
