I've found that a combination of empathy and tough love works best. When I was coaching a team member who was struggling with procrastination, I started by acknowledging the pressures they were facing. I let them know that it's okay to feel overwhelmed sometimes. However, I also emphasized the importance of taking action, no matter how small. We set specific, achievable goals together and broke them down into smaller tasks. I encouraged them to use time management techniques like the Pomodoro Technique to stay focused. Throughout the process, I provided regular feedback and celebrated their successes, no matter how minor.

It is possible to coach someone who struggles with self discipline. This is how to guide them: 1. Understand and identify the root cause of indiscipline. It could be that there are no clear goals, support or structures in place. It could be an emotional challenge or poor mindset. 2. Help them envision where they want their life to be. Sometimes, when there is vision, it can help with overcoming indiscipline. 3. Create support structures and accountability. This can create a sense of responsibility in the client, as they know they have to report to somebody.
