Career development coaches are making these mistakes. Are you guilty of any of them?

Career coaching has no barrier to entry. There are prominent coaches on Linkedin whose total qualification is having once found a job themselves. Or, attended a 6 week seminar and earned a coaching certification. Or, knows how to gain Linkedin Influencer status. A coach should understand career progressions, how hiring managers hire, and how recruiters identify talent and qualify candidates. And, coaches who simply entire this niche to make money are doing harm to those who trust them.

Be clear if you're offering coaching to find a career path and general career direction; find a new job; or improve in the current role and move ahead. Also note if your approach is client-driven, or if you have a set agenda or program to follow. Some situations can handle a program, others are better served with a customized approach. Being clear to coachees helps them understand how you can help, set expectations, and sets you both up for success.

No matter your experience level, you're bound to make mistakes in the workplace. Despite how it may feel when you make a mistake, it's only human. When you understand how to respond appropriately, it allows you to improve your overall image as a working professional. It's tricky to identify a niche as it initially feels limiting. However, a niche allows you to speak to the right clients and for them to realise you can help them. If you are a trained coach, you can work with anyone, so it's not about your ability to coach. What it does instead is enables clients to find you and you know you can talk the right / same language with them.

In my experience active listening is one of the most crucial skills of being a master coach - and observing what is happening with the clients body language, tone of voice, breathing plus what is happening in the background of the client. The use of pausing, silence, clarification, summarising, paraphrasing etc demonstrate how actively a coach is listening to their client. Investing in CPD is crucial and practising continually all make a master coach.

In my experience contracting up front helps manage expectations and ensures boundaries are maintained. Re contracting throughout the partnership also ensures clear expectations throughout the coaching relationship.

I focus on an evidence based approach for career development of my coachees. There should be clear measurement, to begin with, to measure against. Various assessments can help to get that data. It helps to understand the current situation of the client, for the coach and for the client themselves. Assessments, framework and other tools are of great help in the process. They give clarity to clients on their current and future states and the gaps.

In my experience continual development helps ensure a coach is up to date with the latest developments in psychology, neuroscience etc and helps their clients teach their true potential using the latest evidence base techniques. I love incorporating a range of techniques, tools and strategies, after all we are all different in terms of how we learn best, what motivates us etc

In my experience maintaining contact throughout the coaching relationship and between coaching sessions demonstrates you care, builds the relationship, and co-creates a brilliant life enhancing partnership.

It is not just enough to do research based on individual clients needs per time, we have to brush up consistently on community engagement and our coaching skills too. In my experience continual investment and practise helps ensure I’m up to date with the latest research around human behaviour, psychology, performance etc I also invest in my own coach supervisor, therapist and coach to ensure I’m exploring how I can be top of my game as a master coach.
