The more devices you deploy the more complexity and additional overhead you add to your network. This isn't a draw back, but something to be aware of. Additional devices also create additional hops, making the destination further away. These additional hops can result in slower connections as more has to happen. Find a balance. Consider if you need more or less devices. What feature can each device perform, is all-in-one an option for you? Optimise the point-to-point links, routing, qos and speed/duplex.

However, if you're looking for other threats you will want to consider the more expensive options such as IDS/IPS, ultimately you're looking to have designed a network here that gives you packet level data/session flows and logging and is all sent to centralised NMS tools where you can create the necessary alerts and trigger actions to notify you the moment something happens.

Our biggest challenge managing networks is our users. If the users work for the same company as us there is likely good security on corporate devices, good CBT and monitoring. If the users are in an open network we're managing then we can't control their education. In both cases either user could be the victim of an attempt to breach. In one of them we're protecting corporate data. Corporate CBT sessions will cover best practices to avoid this. If there's no CBT or the users are on an open network we manage then we have to consider how much protection we put in place. In effect, we have to try and counter the lack of education with tight security rules. Too tight though users won't be happy and may leave. Too open though...
