Depending on industries, TAKT time, product, process robustness, supplier performance..., JIT can be realized by a levelling box in the end of production line (collection of finish goods), or in the beginning of the production (this need precise planning of the production). JIT is an ideal state which operation strive for, because the situation is always changing, the product quality, supplier parts, customer demand, price..., JIT is a way to overcome these challenges by reducing the minimum stocks (=cost of these challenges/changes). Lean is continuous improvement of master all these challenges/changes/factors through striving JIT to meet customer demands with minimum stocks. Before implement JIT, detail VSM must be performed first.

JIT production strategy is know fir elimination if wastes and limiting inventory as much as it is required for us. This helps in reduction of maintenance costs, material costs but to implement JIT we need indepth knowledge of processes, required materials, supplier production times, lead times, transit time otherwise it results in shortages on line causing pauses.

A consistent JIT environment outside of Automotive environments is highly unlikely. Rule of thumb: know your bottle necks in advance. Monitor them and stay on the tasks and actions that will mitigate them bloom for mini/temporary bottlenecks that might jump up and bite you. While there are continous improvement projects happening in manufacturing process, there should be mandatory review of the value stream for relavent commodities. Sometimes a reduction in cycle time due work load redistribution at a particular workstation or automation may result in quicker consumption of parts. If supplier is not communicated of the change and vsm is not adjusted, there will be delays in delivery and JIS setup will be impacted.
