Don’t dismiss other employees that work at the company you’re interested in, and don’t dismiss in-person! In a digital world, face to face is more valuable than ever. I had an individual that wanted to apply to my team reach out to me on LinkedIn, and then ended up at a tech mixer in my local area to chat in person, all because we connected on LinkedIn and he asked me about the company and how I liked my role. If we were hiring, he’d definitely be the first person I’d bring up to our hiring manager. Don’t sleep on in-person mixers and job fairs.

5 Prepare for interviews and follow up

The final step is to prepare for interviews and follow up with the employers. Research the company, the role, and the interviewer before the interview, and prepare some questions to ask them. Practice your answers to common interview questions, and use the STAR method (situation, task, action, result) to showcase your skills and achievements. Dress professionally, arrive on time, and be confident and courteous during the interview. After the interview, send a thank-you note to the interviewer, and restate your interest and enthusiasm for the job. Follow up with them until you get a response, and don't give up.

The days of simply sending out what you feel is a “pristine” resume and hoping they’ll like the layout are over. You are now a small fish in a sea of other applicants all flowing with the same current, being filtered out by applicant tracking systems. Gotta stand out. Study the company you’re applying to. Study their successes, their shortfalls, and find room for improvement, and then tie in your skills directly with that improvement so you can show how you’ll bring value to the company.
