You've found a new photoshoot location. How can you elevate your work creatively?

What I would do first is use the natural light because it is the most crucial thing & it does affect the artificial lighting. Then if the natural light isn't playing much role, then I would do add some bright light at one side of my face to create Shadows on the other side & place the specific coloured light on the other side so that it matches the vibe of the video/film.

Look at all of the details and storytelling moments. Remember to always look up, down and all around. Try shooting from different angles - not just eye level. Pretend you are writing a blog post about this location. What would you include to make the readers feel like they were there or want to go visit after seeing your images.

Recall an advertising campaign that I was shooting on medium format transparency film for Mezzaluna in Bahrain back in the year 2000 ... Really had to study the ambient light, as had to wait and time this to-exact moment ... Over a couple of fined-tuned minutes - over a three day-period for the ambient late afternoon-sunlight cutting through a silther of a sky light-window to yield the exact right-ambience for this shot … Which was filled-in with a Visatec 600J monolight flash head mounted on a soloflex 60cm square softbox... It produced a fine art shot which was published on billboards and print form with just their logo and their phone number! It worked a treat as their phone line was rung of the hook with curious people phoning in ??

photography is capturing light, so it's all about how you can use the lighting at that location. an extra light will help for sure to bring in some dynamics

I often get asked to click pictures in a social setting. Perhaps now over the years, my friends have realised that I do take pictures with a good composition, avoiding unnecessary background and the angle of the subject, not to be missed the angle of the camera also counts significantly. Many a time, my clicks can be seen as their profile pics too. The composition, foreground-background, and positive-negative space play a huge role in making a picture subtly good. The un-said triangles in the picture add charm. For eg, a pic of a couple embracing each other. The hands wrapped around in a way that forms a triangle is considered a nice picture as it allows the eyes to move from A to B to C and captures the whole essence of the subject.

Finding all the positions, placement, and angles that you like takes time. Spend at least an hour, if not more, to keep discovering. I still find it surprising how I may discover something new an hour later when I thought I had exhausted all the possibilities.

For portraits, I like to see what colour my sitter is wearing and then shoot backgrounds with complementary or contrasting colours. Like a blue jumper against a rusty orange pillar, or a blue jumper against a blue wall.

I always check with my model, stylist or client what are they wearing during the planning process... colors and what type of accessories... how the hair is done... then from what I know during the 1 hour scout mode i will first look at places that will compliment the model and give a good contrast... if the contrast is not happening with natural light I will use my artificial lights to make that happen... Also to note if the client or model loves b/w shots you NEED to have contrast... else b/w will not work 90% of the time...

Adaptability is a great skill to have in your arsenal as a photographer. I mean, you're a photographer not a magician; your ability to implement what natural elements or conditions you meet at your location of shoot is essentially what makes you a creative. You want to tell your story in all of its uniqueness. Nature offers us a great artillery of inspirations. Use them intentionally. This is why I stopped changing backgrounds for my images. I feel it erodes the authenticity of those images. If nature decides bless your shoot with rain, use it. If it blesses you with the wind use it. If it blesses you with night fall, ensure to tell a great story out of it. Fall in love with what you find, that way you can make the best out of it

Try as you might, you can almost never account for the weather to do what you want it to do. But don't dispair, this is where your talent as a creative can shine. Adapting to changing conditions is an essential skill that can be hard to practice for. I often find there is a unique image hidden within every shift of the elements. One that not only demonstrates your ability as a photographer, but also one that pokes fun at the conventions of photography by breaking with the norm of posed or staged photos. Its your job as the photographer to dig through the anxiety of the change and take control of your final image.

A picutre can tell an impactful story just through the scene-setting, the characters, the composition, the colour schemes and also through the lights and locations. A picture of fashion model standing next to the dated door of an old barn can perhaps a story by the contrast of new/modern and old history, the subdued shades of the building with the bright fabrics, the texture of the wall or door blending the with soft satin or velvet. A picture of humans, animals or birds can also say a lot without words through the emotions and expressions captured in the shot. One can be innovative for the storytelling scenes just by using the right elements in the frame.

Technology is advancing at an astonishing rate these past few years. Cameras are slimming down, shutters moving quicker, and light being manipulated in astonishing ways. I have long argued that adequate preperation before a shoot makes more difference than the age of the equipment. A lack of light can be solved with anything from massive studio grade strobes to pocket flashlgihts and phone screens. Understanding your target image, storyboarding your process, and taking a mental image of your goal will help you capture that dream shot - regardless of how much you spend on your equipment. However, most importantly, don't be afraid to throw out a script. Conditions change and present new challenges and opportunities for creativity.
