Identifying of potential risks and putting in place a robust business continuity plan with detailed process and procedure is key to ensuring network downtime does not occur. However downtime are imminent but then to ensure it does not repeat, one must evaluate the root cause carefully, understand the failure touch points and provide improvement plan. -ensuring redundancy with regular failover tests on links, power etc, -vendor/provider SLA assessment and review -proactive monitoring to identify and resolve threats -preventive maintenance. and lastly Governance to all of the above is very critical.

Whenever possible, update your spare part first, then replace the one in production, and only after that, update the second device. Multiple updates can disrupt your network, causing far more damage than running outdated software in a controlled environment.

This, in my view is THE most important one. The first step to prevent downtimes of your network is to actually understand that they WILL definitely happen. So a proper contingency plan is key. Make sure you define and plan for the worse scenarios as they may, and probably will, happen. Remember that networking is the heart of any IT system or tool. You need many hearts!

Do you need off-site backups (cloud implementation is very helpful in this regard), what is your recovery plan, BIA, etc.

To avoid a repeat of network downtime, the incident response is important. Looking at the root cause analysis critically and putting measures in place to prevent another downtime. For example, if it is link related, I've seen many situations where you have a primary (Fibre) and a secondary (Microwave Radios) link in place and one link goes down the other kicks in automatically using AD to prefer a link over the other. On the other hand, I've seen situations where you have the same arrangement where the primary link goes down and the alternative link does not kick in. So to avoid a repeat, you might need to review your timing for testing the backup links based on the past experience. Effective monitoring of the links at the NOC as well

Downtime happens, unfortunately. Having a contingency plan is the same as planning off-site backups for emergency preparedness purposes.
