*** First of all *** Contract! You nearly won't reach miscommunication if you have a signed contract and promises by both sides are kept. But if you did reach it.... From my experience, take down your ego, start with an apology, acknowledging the misunderstanding. Even if you believe you're the one who is right. Then... communicate openly to clarify any points of confusion and listen to their concerns. Then... find solutions or compromises to address the issue, keep the lines of communication open and transparent.

Bad press from influencers can be very damaging for a game or brand. Miscommunication, or even perceived miscommunication, can occur when activating influencer campaigns. Often they will occur as the influencer is simply a huge fan of the game and wants to get as much access as is possible to behind the scenes, or unreleased content, and can become frustrated when treated as a contractor as opposed to an extension of your marketing team. Influencers are key voices in your most important stakeholder, your community. Fixing these relationships should therefore be a priority. Try and embed them into your organisation as much as is legally possible and make them feel a part of the crew, whilst being very clear on communication barriers.

Brush it off. You won’t always have time to do these six steps for every single influencer. Quietly learning internally and taking steps to ensure whatever you were criticised for doesn’t happen again is one option. Some say, ‘there’s no such thing as bad publicity.’ While I think it’s more nuanced than that, drama from influencers will ultimately increase awareness of your product or company as well. Something to bear in mind.
