You’ve detected a cyber threat. How can you respond effectively?

Quickly gather information about the incident from various sources such as alerts, logs, and reports. Determine the nature and severity of the incident based on its impact on systems, data, and operations. Conduct a detailed forensic analysis to identify the source and extent of the incident. Trace the source of the incident by analyzing log files, network traffic, and system configurations. Define the scope of the incident response based on the findings of the investigation.

It’s a different story when you talk about incidents on public cloud environments like AWS. You need to ensure that all the necessary logs are collected and analyzed, it’s the customer’s responsibility to configure and collect these logs and the service provider will not take care of this (Refer to the shared responsibility model) Using native tools can help you lay a baseline however specialized tools can provide a deeper insight into the infection and its capabilities or how far the infection spread.

Quickly collect all relevant information like the beacon / flags, complete logs / reports. Involve the most 'Cyber Risk management' educated person in your currunt vicinity. Understand the nature / type of incidence and it's severity / impact. Try minimising the impact. Try to do forensics to reach to the root cause. Try to recover at maximum possibilities And lastly, report the use case to proper authorities.

How to start Immediate Isolation: Quickly isolate the affected systems to prevent the spread of the threat. Identify the Threat: Accurately identify the nature and scope of the threat. Activate Response Plan: You'll need to implement your pre-defined incident response plan. Communicate Transparently: Notify stakeholders, including employees and potentially affected parties, with clear, concise information. Containment and Eradication: Take steps to contain and eradicate the threat. Recovery: Initiate recovery processes to restore systems and data. Post-Incident Analysis: Conduct a thorough analysis to understand the incident and prevent future occurrences. Update Security Measures: Revise and strengthen security measures based on learnings.

As soon as an incident is reported or detected, we should find out whether there is an Incident Management Process, a HelpDesk, or some other type of technical support unit. If there is, follow its guidelines. If not, you can adopt the steps suggested here for a first response to the incident and then work towards implementing a Process.

Containing the threat is more than blocking IPs that are targeting your network. Your SOC should be able to take this device, contain it, and then pivot to find related devices. Additionally, the team needs to be able to determine how this device was compromised. Once the team has found how the device was compromised, they need to use that data to develop a plan to prevent this in the future. Lastly, the team should continue their investigation after containment and prepare for eradication. They will need to determine if there is any persistent access methods that were installed and ensure they are removed. The path to containment will be different with each organization and the policies, laws, and goals of the company.

Set-up protective DNS immediately to stop the contact between the attackers and the malware in your network. This way you can stop its standard communication, DNS tunneling, and other means of contact.

One time at work, we faced a cyber threat, and a key step was to promptly contain it. This meant isolating affected systems and preventing further spread. Having predefined protocols in place and a rapid response team greatly aided in minimizing potential damage.

In my experience, eradicating the cyber threat involves not just removing malicious elements but also fortifying vulnerable areas. This proactive approach ensures that the threat is completely neutralized, and we're not just addressing the immediate issue but also bolstering our defenses against similar future attacks.

The threat got into your system somehow, and you need to find out how. There is either a security layer missing, or it is some 0-day vulnerability; in the latter case you need to have the whole attack kill-chain covered. Make sure you have a mean of severing the communication of malware with its author (e.g. via protective DNS), so that you can intercept it in different stages of the attack life-cycle.

After resolving the threat, it's crucial to analyze the impact and root cause. One thing I've found helpful is conducting a comprehensive post-incident review. This involves assessing the damage caused, learning from the experience, and identifying any systemic weaknesses to implement long-term improvements in our cybersecurity strategy.

Here's my take: Cybersecurity analysts not only understand the distinct nature of each threat but also play a crucial role in ensuring confidence during inevitable cyber incidents. Effectiveness relies on our in-depth technical training and procedural knowledge, with emphasis on data redundancy and encrypting backups. It's not a matter of "if," it's a matter of "when." Picture a small to mid-level enterprise without clear recovery plans during a ransomware attack. Without encrypted off-premise storage or reliable cloud data duplicates, the enterprise confronts a grim reality, with critical decisions to make on the cybersecurity chessboard.

How can you respond effectively? That's simple! You just follow that Incident Response Plan, which you meticulously reviewed, tested and updated following best practices? You do have an up-to-date plan, right? ???? Oh, you don't have one or it hasn't been looked at in years? Well, in that case, create (or buy) the Incident Response Plan, Procedure and Playbooks, test them thoroughly and pray for the best outcome! ??

It's important to remember the people aspect. A cyber incident response is a stressful event. People will be scared - scared of being blamed, scared of being fired, scared of the company closing. Strong, calm leadership is important - there will be a time and place for accountability, but it's important, especially in the early stages, that people are encouraged, motivated, and enabled to work efficiently to identify the cause, remediate it, and improve the systems. A culture of openness and honesty encourages knowledge sharing - that transparency will be the key to understanding, and remediating, the full scope of the incident.

An Incident Management Process must be in place beforehand. So one of the first tasks to be done within the company is to define and implement an Incident Management Process and continuously work towards its improvement and maturity.

Follow these steps to respond effectively: 1. Isolate: Immediately isolate the affected system or network segment to prevent further damage. 2. Analyze: Investigate the nature and extent of the threat. 3. Mitigate: Take action to mitigate the threat's impact, such as updating security measures. 4. Alert: Notify relevant stakeholders about the reoccurrence of the threat and the steps being taken to address it. 5. Enhance Monitoring: Strengthen monitoring and detection capabilities to prevent future occurrences. 6. Review: Conduct a post-incident review to identify any gaps or weaknesses in existing security. Being proactive while designing the RMF, think of #resilience viz #security.
