Designing a home for me has to provide comfort, elegance and aesthetics to the person(s) living there. Simplicity is definitely the key but ease of moving, functionality and calmness matter a lot. Interesting Lines and shapes play a major role in art and furniture, so does the background and culture of the client. Their requirements and availability of resources is the basis of everything.

Whether communicating to team members, collaborators or even students, it is important to be consistent and authentic to your design values. Your design philosophy is an extension of you as an individual. How to present ones philosophy may call for alignment with one's audience but essentially, ones design philosophy stays more or less consistent.

This can't be emphasized enough - being authentic and consistent is important in every part of life, design philosophy being no exception. This is not to say that one's design philosophy can't evolve - it must be flexible, yet consistent with one's core values. Going with 'fashionable trends' alone may not serve the long term purpose of a design project well. It's easy to fall into the trap of trends, however being consistent with one's design philosophy while being a sponge to the new ideas around oneself is important to one's evolution as a designer.
