Communication is key for any development project. The goals, requirements and priorities have to documented and conveyed between teams to help with successful delivery of change. Timely feedback can help resolve conflicts and steer the project toward its needed goal.

Communication is a critical challenge not just in software projects but in any project involving multiple stakeholders, entities, organizations, and departments. To address this challenge, it's essential to maintain regular, frequent communication with all stakeholders. Documenting decisions, risks, goals, and priorities is vital, and promptly resolving any miscommunications is crucial. As an engineering leader driving the project, it's important to keep everyone informed about project updates, risks, changes, and any significant deviations. Having a repository, such as a wiki, where all communication artifacts are available and accessible to all project stakeholders, is also beneficial.

Often you see conflicts of interests when you have a dedicated business PO. The technical topics and ongoing needed maintenance are overlooked, or get less priority. We handle this by making this visible on a dashboard. This shows the status of CI/CD pipelines, code quality, vulnerabilities found etc. We discuss this as part of our daily SU. By making the issues visible (with red colors preferred) the whole team including SM and PO will be triggered to act also. After introducing this WoW (and of course explain the why), the team can keep up with technical debt without a lot of discussions or different priorities. It's just part of the daily job of a good DevOps team! :-)

Communication is the biggest challenge I would say. the minute there is a clear communication, things start becoming smoother in terms of clarity of goals, roles which increases the team productivity. We used Standup meetings to achieve the clear communication to a great extend. That also maintain healthy team environment and sense of ownership.

Communication plays a critical role in software development. The team who conducts the workshop and captures business requirements is paramount for the success of the project.I believe the most common challenge is capture partial or incorrect business requirements, misalignment between business team and IT Team, unreasonable timeline, scope creep and improper business data to accomplish goals. Thoughtful planning is very critical for project success. Keep communication with the stakeholders, raise dependency in time, keep contingency in the project budget and timeline.

In some cases scope creep is caused by external changes which we have little control over and we need to find ways to manage them efficiently. However, more often than we think, scope creep is just a symptom of the fact that we haven't defined the scope of the project well in the first place. If we plan our projects more thoroughly from the beginning, we would discover many of these "new" requirements upfront, will be able to plan for them and won't be surprised when these requirements come in later, after a significant portion of project implementation is completed disguised as scope creep.

This reminds me of a software project I managed where frequent ?????????? ???????????? from the client led to scope creep. Initially, we struggled to manage these changes, but introducing a ???????????? ?????????????? Protocol turned things around. By documenting and evaluating each request’s impact on timelines and costs, we brought clarity and helped the client prioritize effectively. Regularly revisiting the project scope during sprint planning also kept everyone aligned. I learned that managing scope creep isn’t about resisting change but channeling it constructively. Clear communication and proactive expectation management are key to staying on track without compromising quality!

Programming Languages: Mastery of at least one programming language is fundamental. Popular choices include Python, JavaScript, Java, C++/C# ..., Data Structures and Algorithms, Databases Knowledge , Version Control Systems (Git), Software Development Methodologies, Soft Skills: Problem-Solving, Communication, Collaboration, Adaptability, Persistence, and Patience (and don't forget to eat healthy and have activity )

Scope creep can manifest often resulting from evolving business requirements or lack of clarity in project scope. In SAP projects mainly due to: - Additional Customizations: During the development phase, stakeholders may request additional customizations or functionalities beyond the initially agreed-upon scope. For example: certain client-requested field additions can delay development timelines. - Changes in Integration Requirements: As the project progresses, stakeholders may realize the need for additional integrations with other systems or modules outside the original scope. For instance, integrating SAP with a third-party CRM system might be requested mid-project, requires adjustments and potentially leads to scope creep.

I think the biggest issue will always be the temptation to add more into scope. It’s human nature. It becomes all too easy to adopt ‘whilst we are add it let’s do…’ attitude. Always try to stay focussed on the real priority and the must have needs. Remember if it is that good an idea then it can be done in a later phase!

Technical debt cannot only happen at code level or during shortcuts made but at design level as well. I have seen products going into a direction, where some of the business needs have changed completely leading to design and code changes. The code is sitting and doing nothing. It can be a small module or a function. Technical debt can be identified by reviewing and scanning the code regularly and reviewing them manually before new features development. Tools like sonar or checkstyle can also be very helpful in identification. Moreover, testing also plays an important role to see how performant is code and capture how repeating errors can be fixed

Many aspects of IT are out of the team's control - office politics, company budget and financial issues, staffing changes, etc. It is important to identify what issues can be fixed by the team and provide empathy for team members when issues are not the team's fault. We need to be better at building partnerships inside our organizations. There is an increase of toxic culture that needs to be fixed before IT teams can gel and be effective. Changing a business culture is extremely rare and very difficult. Successful managers will find unique ways to work with their employees personalities and deliver quality products. Employees need to find ways to build trust. The people side of IT work is the hardest part.

Two things here: 1. Prevent tech debt early -- esp. in your infrastructure and work processes. Build an automated development and deployment pipeline at the beginning and include automated testing. Spending extra time up front will save lots of time when you are in the thick of development and the code base is very large -- and leaders want releases/fixes out quickly. 2. Document your tech debt as new stories to be prioritized in your backlog. Write down the decisions that have been made that are leading to some technical debt and why, then have the story(ies) written that will address them. Not only will this help others understand the state of the code if they come in later, but will keep these issues on the radar of product leaders.

Any fool can make gains in the short-term, but it requires wisdom to build quality into the process of development. Attention to technical excellence ensures the probability of wasteful action in the future will be kept to a minimum. Try leaving that nail in your car's tire or ignoring that clunking noise from your front end, and you will pay the stupid tax eventually. Why should product development be any different? Ignore the developer who is frightened to make changes to a class, or the manager who balks and making a tech debt business case, or the burned-out support person for too long and you will pay the stupid tax just the same.

Technical gap If you are looking for a team try to have people with similar levels, in case your team is flat and there is no hierarchy. Having people with huge technical gap would end up with frustration or culture of fear in the team. Identify those on the higher or lower levels and help them to grow to the next level.

Whenever possible, deadlines must include formal training and mentoring by the most senior dev. If the most senior dev lack mentoring/leading skills, it's responsibility of the company to train him/her.

Um cuidado que tem que ter, principalmente com a quantidade de tecnologias "hypadas" é que o time tem que ter o domínio técnico no desenvolvimento da arquitetura e n?o usar o projeto como um laboratório para experimentar novas tecnologias. Já vi casos de darem autonomia para o time usar a tecnologia que queriam mas depois a manuten??o da "salada de frutas" que virou o produto acabou ficando inviável e foi necessário reescrever muita coisa novamente na tecnologia que a maioria do time tinha conhecimento. Ent?o, algumas premissas de desenvolvimento precisam ser claras desde o início para evitar esse tipo de problema.

Teams that hire junior developers absolutely need mentors. I have witnessed young devs struggling because they just don't have the skills and need a mentor/lead dev to help them. Without that help they become overwhelmed and lost and possibly leave.

Ineffective matching of domain knowledge skill and technical skills poses a significant challenge for developer and tester as well. Both roles require a balance of these skills for successful outcomes. When there's a mismatch between domain and technical expertise, it results in reworks, redesigns, and missed deadlines. It's crucial to select team members who possess both skill sets or provide comprehensive training before onboarding them.

Normally inside the team I've seen the testers in one side and developers in the other side. There shouldn't be sides inside a team. The goal of the testers normally is to find as many bugs as possible. And many times there are arguments with the developers about whether that is really a bug. The common goal must be to deliver software with enough quality and minimizing the cost. And agree with business what "enough quality" means for the customer

Mix communication channels, favoring direct conversations and video calls when it comes to heated topics. Important nuances and tones are lost in emails.

Software development requires teamwork, inevitably leading to conflicts. However, conflict isn't inherently negative; it shapes ideas, fosters team cohesion, and aligns goals. Unaddressed conflicts can become toxic, so fostering a culture of open communication is vital. Managers or senior engineers can address conflicts either within the team or through one-on-one sessions. Mediation can resolve conflicts between individuals, while conflicts over interests or paths forward can be resolved by focusing on shared goals. Finding common ground is key to progress, even if there's no perfect solution. Compromise and openness to experimentation are often necessary for moving forward positively.

Like in every other area of life, wherever there are people there will be differences of opinion. We spend a lot of time with our colleagues and even as we work as a team, we all come from different places and have different ideas. Unlike in every other area of life, in a work environment, there is a hierarchy no matter how flat the management structure. Hence it's important for managers to do the work to shrink their ego and create and foster an environment where everybody knows that their voice is important and is heard. This empowerment only strengthens the team. The Agile Principles are explicit on this: "Build projects around motivated individuals. Give them the environment and support they need, and trust them to get the job done."

Integration issues can turn out to be challenging. Multiple reasons for that: ? Misunderstanding of requirements ? Communication gap ? Lower priority When an incompatibility is found late it can be hard to fix. Code may need significant rewrite or redesign. Proactive planning of integration needs has helped me avoid pitfalls down the road. From the start: ? List ALL the stakeholders ? Understand their requirements CLEARLY ? Specify API contracts IN DETAIL ? Get sign-off from ALL sides Software might be in parallel development which makes it harder. One approach that works is to "hard code" parameters of API calls to ensure basic interoperability and enable earlier testing. With some careful planning you will win and thrive ??

Integration issues can be avoided by bringing SMEs into play. As a system owner, we need to know our consumers and keep in contact with them for any breaking change. Co-ordination and testing is really important to avoid production issues. Know your customer plays a big role here. Their usage plan helps to plan for scalability

Integration of different modules or systems can be difficult and cause delays. Good planning, testing, and quality control are required.

This is a classic issue that happens quite often. It occurs because of a communication gap. Each side develops based on their understanding without confirmation, leading to integration problems. The specification should be documented and the understanding confirmed before development.

Software integration issues encompass challenges arising from combining diverse software components, systems, or applications smoothly. These issues include compatibility, interoperability, dependency conflicts, data consistency, performance bottlenecks, security vulnerabilities, testing difficulties, documentation gaps, and scalability limitations. Associate schedule is one of the key challenges as well (which goes un-noticed) - as a practice I recommend to have a team calendar to capture the planned vacations and in case there is a conflict - plan the mitigation, thereby giving smple scope for folks to re-energize.

To counter this, it's crucial to diversify code maintenance responsibilities among multiple engineers, despite initial delays in adaptation, and to broaden cross-training efforts. This approach will enhance project resilience and promote long-term success by eliminating single points of failure and fostering a more collaborative environment.

Dependency Management and Role Ambiguity:Unclear roles and responsibilities lead to confusion and redundancy, while managing dependencies between different parts of the project or with external teams can be complex.

One of the most important and underrated thing in a software development project is ownership of your work. Each individual in the team should take end to end ownership of their work. From project manager to junior developer, if everyone is able to take responsibility of their work, then eventually the work would be distributed in a proper way and not 1-2 members of the team would feel the burden of checking in if all the work has been done or not apart from their own work. Trust in the team, also plays a big role here.
