The use of tooling would happen with or without remote working, what you therefore need to focus on is replacing the lack of face to face opportunities caused by remote working. Try to mitigate this with video conferencing, but don't rely purely on group calls. Take the time for some one -to-one calls with stakeholders. This will build rapport and ensure that any issues and questions can be handled more personably, building closer working relationships and addressing the lack of traditional face to face opportunities and "water cooler" discussions.

The effectiveness of a purely remote governance engagement will depend very much on the design of the underlying governance framework and the culture and data maturity of the organisation. It is essential to have appropriate data stewards embedded in the business with clear roles and responsibilities for data, and APPROPRIATE TRAINING. AND RESOURCING. Also: purely remote is unlikely to be sustainable. It is important to engage with data stewards and build personal connection - so some level of planned in-person meeting for collaborative work and team building is essential. A critical risk is “out of sight, out of mind” - this has to be managed.
