Creativity is a valuable skill in any project, especially when you need to solve problems, innovate, or stand out from the crowd. But how can you boost your creative thinking and generate original ideas? Here are some tips to help you think outside the box and unleash your imagination.
One of the barriers to creative thinking is relying on the same old assumptions and beliefs that limit your perspective. To break free from these mental traps, you need to question them and challenge them with evidence, logic, or alternative viewpoints. For example, if you assume that your project has to follow a certain format, ask yourself why that is the case and what would happen if you changed it. Or, if you believe that your target audience has a specific preference, test it with data or feedback.
Begin by defining your ultimate goal with a clear "what". Then, delve deeper with "why" – why is this goal crucial, and why is achieving it essential? But don't stop there. Engage in an iterative questioning process. Continuously asking "what" and "why" helps you challenge assumptions, uncover hidden opportunities, and understand the true meaning behind your goal. This iterative approach unlocks the power of contextual awareness. You gain a deeper understanding of the unique circumstances and specific factors surrounding your goal. This paves the way for contextual innovation – solutions that are not just effective, but also highly relevant and tailored to the specific situation.
Every effective manager must possess the ability to see the project with the customer's perspective and possess comprehensive knowledge of their team's operations to maintain a holistic view of the project. This broader perspective enables them to generate innovative solutions to challenges. Furthermore, I suggest the implementation of both CONERGENT and DIVERGENT thinking methodologies. Initially, this involves brainstorming numerous ideas without critique or evaluation, fostering creativity. (Divergent thinking) Subsequently, the focus shifts towards refining and selecting the most promising ideas through a process of deliberate narrowing down. (Convergent thinking)

Applying concepts from diverse sectors can lead to innovative solutions that haven't been explored within your specific niche. I've also found that using analogies and metaphors from different industries can be helpful in conceptualizing ideas. Analogical thinking involves drawing parallels between seemingly unrelated concepts, sparking creativity. For example, comparing your marketing strategy to a successful sports team could yield innovative insights.
Every new project inherently requires creativity; if it’s always been done a certain way, then it really isn’t new. However, when you do recognize that you’re trapped in a rut, then you need to understand where you draw your inspiration from and plan time to draw from that source. Being mindful about making space in one’s schedule to take in those sources of inspiration can be more important than continuing to unproductively grind on work. Know your personal limitations and know when you need to step away from your desk to take a walk, go to a museum, read a book or whatever works for you. That time spent recharging will help you refocus in a more creative and productive manner.
In my opinion, one of the best ways to think outside the box is to interact with people who think differently from you. A different perspective on a situation, a different solution on a difficult task or even just a simple two bits intake from another person can help you come up with an idea that you did not have before. While books, podcasts, art or music might help in getting insights, opinions/perspectives from people help in an entirely different way. They come from experience. Nothing can beat this.

There's one thing that always helps me during the brainstorming phase: crank out bad ideas on purpose. Brainstorming is hardest when we feel pressure to come up with good ideas. But if you accept that garbage ideas are just a byproduct of the process of uncovering good ideas, it can be easier to accept them. Try challenging yourself to come up with 10-20 bad ideas. Be intentionally outrageous, corny, impractical, or inappropriate, so that you can get new ideas flowing. That's often when the best ideas show up.

Mind mapping and making use of non traditional methods is such a key accessible way to develop creativity. This is such an important step of the process to generate innovative thinking, and then afterwards you can allow for a greater sense of pragmatism and plan out what the priorities seem to be and what is going to be realistic in the timeframe or with the resources you have.
Contrary to what you might think, creativity is not hindered by constraints, but rather enhanced by them. Constraints force you to think more creatively and find solutions within the given limits. For example, you can use time constraints to focus on the essential aspects of your project and avoid procrastination. Or, you can use resource constraints to find more efficient and innovative ways to use what you have. Or, you can use quality constraints to set higher standards and expectations for your project.
If your project involves catering to a specific cultural context, use cultural constraints to inspire unique features or designs that resonate with the target audience. Cultural constraints can be a rich source of inspiration for artistic and creative endeavors. (For example, McDonald's developed a vegetarian-centric menu to cater to the tastes of the Indian population when they launched in India). If your team is spread across different time zones, use this constraint to your advantage. Foster a culture of continuous improvement by encouraging team members to contribute asynchronously, allowing for round-the-clock development and creativity.
Creativity is not a solitary activity, but a collaborative one. By working with others who have different skills, backgrounds, and opinions, you can benefit from their insights, feedback, and support. You can also learn from their creative methods and approaches, and adopt them to your own project. For example, you can join a brainstorming session with your colleagues or peers, and ask them to share their ideas and suggestions. Or, you can seek mentorship or guidance from someone who has more experience or expertise in your field.

Those periods of leisure and fun can allow you space to reflect and generate new ideas - despite not often feeling like times when we are doing something they can be the pockets of time and thinking which allows for our best ideas. Specifically for women, we often work on a different monthly cycle with periods where we are more productive - try working around your cycle rather than against it. For example I can complete tasks more efficiently the week after menstruating whereas ovulation I am best at generating new ideas
Consider these as well - 1. There is some magic in the practice of writing. Use pen and paper, stylus, phone/tablet, or whatever you can- to do an unbiased brain dump. 2. Employ lateral thinking, including absurd and radical ideas. 3. Zoom out - consider the end-to-end perspective and the bigger picture. 4. Toggle constraints to see if you can do trade-offs 5. Step away - sometimes a good night's rest, walking in nature, playing a sport, etc., will ignite creative pathways in your brain. (You simply may be mentally exhausted) 6. Don't go it alone. Involve others that you can trust to help.
