Coming into a new sustainability role is exciting but can also be daunting! This is what I try to live by: - Don't be arrogant but stand your ground - Yes, you're a Subject Matter Expert but we need to value the experience of those who know the inside outs of the organisation. Still, make sure you're confident in yourself and your value - there's a reason why you were hired. - Identify the team's paint points - question how your role and work can add value to the team and organisation, not become an additional burden; how your work and plans can build on existing capability. - Understand your stakeholders - who needs to be involved, when, and at what level; prioritise internal stakeholders as much as external.

Listen and learn to understand the work of the organisation and how your colleagues' roles contribute to it. This then allows you to understand how you fit in and how you can contribute. 2. Work to find out where you can add value quickly with your specific skills or subject matter knowledge. Achieving impact from the start gains you trust and more flexibility to drive new ideas and innovations. 3. Always give credit to others and focus on team efforts. Sustainability in an organisation is driven by multiple individuals working together.
