You're working on a complex Systems Design project. How can you avoid conflicts with your team?

Clearing the scope of the project is very much important when it comes to designing a complex system with great minds. Everyone has their own ways to solve things so for such situations documentation & healthy arguments with pros and cons will help.

Teams are dynamic and you need to respond to the needs of the entire team during a project. Each person must be treated as an individual, but a team should be formed that support each other. This way the team will keep each other going. Systems are built by teams and each person should know their crucial individual part. If you manage to show the vision and keep treating people like individuals most conflicts can easily be avoided. When they do arise, listen to all parties and reach conclusions that make the most sense for the system and then project. The system will live on but the project will end. Don't focus too much on the short term and ensure the best decision for the longer term is being made. Explain all decisions to the team.

A system designer, and even a product manager, which is basically a system designer in a certain field, i.e., let's say, Computer Science and Technology, should be like an antiknock or a motor oil. The motor should be designed, built, and handled by the team. The parts of the motor are the team, the development, and the product. A system designer or a product manager should lubricate the team communication and the product development progress. So she must be able to develop efficient connections between the parts. She must know things about personal and social psychology, and she must know how to organize things... So, she must know about the ups and downs of the team members, and when to act and to see and to give her team the courage...

Data driven decisions are important. When it comes to different opinions in the team, each member should support their claim with data. Sometimes a simple proof-of-concept application would be very helpful to collect the data. Other times a previous experience could he helpful. When a deeper research is required, which usually contradicts to the modern fast-paced development cycles, one needs to find a balance between making progress in one direction vs exploring all possible options.

Keeping communication open and clear is essential. This involves inviting team members to face-to-face meetings where differences can be discussed openly in a neutral and impartial setting, such as a cafeteria or during a walk outside. It's important to listen to all sides and understand different perspectives to find common ground

I've Lways found it helpful to air any disputes face to face with all stakeholders to ensure that all opinions are heard and discussed. Everyone should be entitled to input.

Communication is vital to the success of any complex development. Communication should be in multiple forms and can be customized based on the teams needs, strengths and comfort level.

I've found giving no-shame permission for *any* question - including those that that might be really basic or obvious - because normally other people are also wondering but not asking! No such thing as a silly question. Really helpful.

Be sure to insure a culture of no “ killing the messengers” . Keep meetings focused encourage communication between team members outside the meetings. Hallway discussions are great for collaboration.

Division of tasks has its own dangers. Encourage continual feedback on progress and problems, both laterally and vertically. Don’t shoot the messengers.

I agree with all points and I would stress the aspect of defining clearly the interfaces of your product. It means clear requirements, clear responsibility, deep dependency analysis, and open discussion. Interfaces are usually one of most challenging parts and sometimes it is overlooked, especially when there is shared responsibility between teams.

Consider about addressing functional as well as non-functional requirements (NFRs) whole designing. These include aspects such as performance, scalability, security, usability, and maintainability. Designing with NFRs in mind from the outset can help ensure that the system meets these requirements and performs optimally under various conditions

To some extend this can be divided into logical parts and assign different ownership. However, all the pieces should be put together at the end to have the final design

Define interfaces and focus on them. This is a good communication tool. Develop specifications trees and functional flow diagrams

Insist on constructive criticism focused on the design not the persons. Insist on “thick skins “on the team. Propose alternate solutions and do trade studies to select the best solutions. Insist on conceptual reviews and preliminary and more detailed reviews. Do breadboards or prototyping early to verify design approach

Agree with all the comments, and from my experience, fast iterations are king in a very dynamic environment where we live in. Also, accepting mistakes when they come along because they are part of the "real" working, but most important, learn from them and act accordingly

Clearly defining the roles and responsibilities of the each team member is one of the precautionary measure. Ask everyone to come up with the use cases along with their proposals and discuss on them with the team without prefixed mindset could help us in reducing the conflicts.
