Too often in my design career, I would ask for testing of the product being designed, and and instead of providing in-house test facilities, I would be told to send the product to a "buddy" of a marketing or sales person. I'd say that 75% of the time, we never got good test results from these people, as they all had a different agenda, and often would either not test the product, or return it with a "It didn't work" message. When we DID get in-house testing, it was extremely helpful, until another division said that they need the equipment more, and we lost the capability. Feedback needs to be timely and accurate!

In my experience, improvements always came with a cost - both in time, and in finances, and often higher-level decisionmakers were unwilling to spend either in their race to market. There is a long-standing running joke: "Sometimes, you just have to shoot the engineer!" but often allowing the engineering team to make improvements is worth the time and money if it enhances performance and/or reliability.

Over the years, the experience I have gained has really paid off in design decisions that I now make for my clients. I have been able to find ways to increase performance and reliability, and cut costs of production.

Vehicle projects can be projected in a waterfall metodology but SW projects, whether in a vehicle project or not, cannot be done in waterfall. It should be agile metodology, scrum or any other similiar one. Forcing SW projects to fit in waterfall structure may only lead to an increased time span of anything.

Don't forget automotive is not just a vehicle. In my opinion a project is effective if the customer is satisfied: the product corresponds to what is expected, in many different terms including but not limiting to design specification, cost, supply, quality, reliability.
