Appreciate and honor the fact that your contribution is only one of many, that are given by others that are just as passionate, skilled and experienced as you and that your ability to work as a team to the cause of the project is what’s most important. Films are successful when people allow one another to be experts within their domain. Refuse to be the team that fights one another and emphasize that you’ll do what’s needed to move the needle in a positive direction every time a decision involves your input.

I believe it also very important to demonstrate that, besides the technical craft of a Film Production, you are familiar with the artist issues regarding the film and you are willing to hear and understand the needs of the Director and all creative team. Having a producer on the team that cares about the art is very valuable for the project.

One thing I strongly suggest is to show your passion and enthusiasm for what you do and what sets you apart. There is a difference between spouting off our resumes (which they already have looked over) to expressing why we love to do what we do. Even when credits and referrals are strong, the interviewer is also looking to see if the person is easy to work with, a team player.

Especially in film production, we always say it takes a village to make a film and indeed it truly takes a village. There's no one man team in film production, every department is interwoven and it takes a collaborative effort for a successful production. There's no room for selfishness and individual isolation. Your ability to work as a team and be a willing team player is what make a successful film project which will at the same time boost your personal skills. Regardless of your department, each component of film making is important hence the need to have various departments and skills come together to produce a beautiful work of art.

One thing I've noticed in the film industry the more you seem to fail or make what seems at the time to be clueless mistakes, the luckier you get and the more you learn. You win in networking. You foster new professional working relationships. These in turn lead to self-improvement and personal growth that you wouldn't find or get anywhere else in the world. The luckier you get, the more you grow in confidence, you grow friendships, you become more insightful which means you begin to read situations, you begin to read people but this also comes from being self-aware. We live in a take, take, take world. When you realise that all people have something to offer, gifts, talents to contribute to the betterment of society, you win. Don't quit.

Being able to speak about yourself before other people especially interviewers can be frightening sometimes, but it is a natural thing. Don't fight it, just use it to your advantage by staying calm, focused and listening to your interviewers.

1. Have pre-existing relationships with someone already involved. Yes networking is important in every career, but this is especially so for film. I've never hired anyone for a film project that I didn't already have a pre-existing relationship with, or who wasn't vouched for by a core member of the team. Shooting a film is long, often stressful work, with very tight schedules. I need to know you're going to work well with everyone and not have to worry about a re-hire in the middle of a production. 2. Have strong previous work samples. That is the order of importance. I'll take someone new that can get along with everyone over an expert that can't, every time. Be kind, patient, and ask questions if you need clarification.

Stay foolish and stay hungry. I said that in my last interview for an in-house role for the sole reason that learning never stops. Where we are now, talent supply outweighs job demand and credibility is one of the most valuable assets you have. Your interviewer will not believe the words they hear 7/10, but they will believe the words they can see. Can you show that you're teachable? Can you show genuine interest in what the person/company is trying to accomplish?

When you start out in the industry, it will benefit you more by being honest with yourself and to your interviewers about what your strengths and weaknesses are. Don't feel ashamed to admit you lack experience in certain parts of a job you intend to do. What employers tend to appreciate more is that you can demonstrate an enthusiastic approach to learning and having the willingness to problem-solve. Your confidence in your job role will naturally come to you as you gain more experience over time.

If you are going for a Director position, or Management position or DP or higher up positions come in with some items like for a director your vision of the production along with maybe a few rough ideas on scenes. For a dp maybe some quick test shots. As management knowledge of some software and some ideas of cost effective things you have found in past. If a creative some drawings like one costume or set roughed out. basically don't just come with a resume. Look like you actually want the job. If you want editing or music being some rough samples of your style. Or if you know their style things that align with their company using your flare.

Your previous work is your best example of what your capable of. Show it off and explain the details of the production process.
